“Gray, you go next, then Rory, and I’ll go last. What’ll it be?” Hayes looks amused, and I’m enjoying this easy moment.

“With two reds off the top, it has to be time for a black card so black.” When Hayes throws down a third red card, everyone laughs, and Gray lets out a sad sigh before taking a drink.

Hayes’ playful gaze lands on me, and he raises his eyebrow. “Fuck it, let’s go with black.” I shrug, not caring if I have to take a sip of my beer.

When Hayes places the card on the table, it’s a black queen of spades. Excellent. I smile wide and wiggle in Gray’s lap.

“Hey, you keep doing that and this game is going to end a lot quicker than you wanted.

Hold up a finger, Little Bird.”

I hold up a finger to indicate my victory and focus on Hayes. He reshuffles and cuts the deck before making his guess, so we know he didn’t cheat and peek at the next card.

“I’m guessing black.” He flips the card, and it’s a black seven.

“Well, aren’t you two special,” Adler says in a sing-song voice.

“Oh, I know I’m special.” I scrunch my nose at him in response, and he smiles.

It’s Wade’s turn again, and he looks so serious. “I’m going red this time.”

The pattern continues until Hayes and I each have two fingers up and everyone else is still sitting at zero. Now, it’s a competition. Adler and Wade each get their next ones right, Gray is wrong yet again, and it all comes down to my next decision. It’s funny how this innocent little game now feels like it’s mirroring my life in that way. I shake my head to get rid of the stupid thoughts I don’t want to be thinking.

“Black hasn’t let me down yet, so I’m sticking with it. Give it to me.” Hayes throws the card down on the table, and it’s a black ace of clubs. “I win!”

“Good job, Little Bird,” Gray whispers in my ear, sending tingles down my spine.

“I can’t believe I won! Now I get to punish someone, right?” I wiggle my fingers together with wicked delight.

Hayes nods at me. “Yes, you can give someone a punishment. It’s basically an amped up dare, so nothing too crazy.”

I chew on my bottom lip while I decide, and when I realize all the guys, minus Gray because he can’t see me as well, are staring, I take a long drink from my beer. I remember this thing Flora dared someone to do at a party we went to in college, and it feels like the perfect time to channel her energy.

“I’ve got it. I need two participants, but only one is going to get the actual punishment, so

Wade and Hayes, you’re up.“ They look at me hesitantly, and each stand from the table. “Okay, Wade, you need to get on your knees.”

“Excuse me?”

“Shh, the time for questions has passed. Get on your knees, mister.” I stand up, so I can enjoy this that much more.

Adler and Gray get up from their seats while Wade lowers himself to his knees on the kitchen floor. Hayes stands back with an intrigued look on his face.

“Hayes, you’re going to take a brand new beer, open it, then with a straight arm raised above your head, pour the beer into Wade’s mouth until it’s empty. Easy.” I clasp my hands together, and everyone laughs except Wade, who lets out a massive groan at the reveal of his punishment.

“Seriously? He’s going to dump it all over me.”

“Hey, man. Give me some credit. My aim is superb.” Hayes tries to comfort Wade, but his shit-eating grin doesn’t help the situation.

“Let’s not dawdle, boys. Come on.” Adler moves next to me and gives me a kiss on the cheek.

“This is fucking awesome, Princess.”

“Thank you. I think it’s going to be highly entertaining.”

We all watch while Hayes pops the top of a new bottle of beer and stands beside Wade. He practices his reach a few times and moves around to make some adjustments. None of these things are doing anything to reassure Wade, and I’m loving it.

“Okay, I’m ready. You good, dude?” Hayes looks down at Wade, who gives him a reluctant nod.
