“Well, it…it’s complicated. Yes, I love him, but I’ve learned a lot of hard truths. It’s hard for those things not to obscure my feelings for him. I think it would be best if I’m not around him.”

“Yes, some people are too weak for things like that.” She takes the first sip of her drink, and I hope she chokes on it.

“Mal, knock it off.” Wade’s voice is harsher than he probably meant it to be, but it makes me smile.

“No, I don’t think I will. How can you all sit here with this girl and act like everything is so great? Are you seriously going to tell me that she’s your choice? After everything I taught you and all the things you know, you’re going to build a future with a Cole? I can’t let my boys throw their lives away like that. I won’t stand for it.”

“That’s enough!” Wade stands up so quickly his chair falls over behind him. “It isn’t up to you, Mal. You don’t get any say over who we spend our time with or who we love. If you don’t like it, that’s too fucking bad.”

“This is exactly what I’m talking about. She’s already changing you. My Wade would never speak to me like this. I’m sorry, boys. I raised you better than this. I hope you can forgive me.” Before I register what’s happening, Mal is standing behind me with a knife to my throat.

“Wait!” Three other chairs screech across the floor as the guys rush to stand and helplessly hold their hands out toward us.

“I know it seems drastic now, but trust me. You’ll all be better off without this poison in your life.” She pushes the blade into my neck harder, and I can feel a drop of blood slide down my throat.

“Mal, let’s please sit down and talk about this calmly. Please? We’ll hear you out, okay? Don’t do anything unnecessary.” I can’t see Mal, but her silence and the hopeful looks on the guys’ faces seem to indicate she’s considering Gray’s words.

“Oh, my little Gray. If you all stay on that side of the table and don’t make any sudden movements, I’m willing to sit back down and talk.”

“Yes, we’ll stay over here. There’s no reason for us to go through all the work of hiding a body. Let’s talk it out like adults and get on with our day.” Hayes shrugs like we’re talking about the weather and not my life.

Mal laughs, and as the guys shift around to all sit across from us, she loosens her hold on me and slowly pulls the knife away. Wade tosses his napkin at me without looking and gestures to my neck. I grab it and delicately put pressure on the side of my throat. I can’t see it, but it definitely hurts, so hopefully it just feels worse than it is.

Suddenly, my heart is in my throat again because there’s a loud commotion from the front door and aggressive stomping into the kitchen. Eddie appears in the doorway looking sweaty and concerned but trying to play it cool.

“Hey. Is there still food? I decided to come after all.” Wade gives him a confused look, and Eddie looks like he’s trying to convey the fact that Mal is a fucking psychopath getting ready to hold a knife to my throat, but he doesn’t know he’s late.

“Yeah, man, grab a plate and dish up. Mal was going to tell us why she disapproves of Rory, and we were listening to her convincing perspective.” Eddie eyes Wade cautiously, but when his gaze passes over me, he sees me holding the bloody napkin to my throat.

“Oh. Okay. Well, don’t stop on my account.” Eddie adopts an almost lazy demeanor and sets his plate on Mal’s other side.

She doesn’t seem the least bit concerned by him being on this side of the table, but that’s probably because she doesn’t have to worry about his feelings for me. My suspicions are confirmed when Mal looks up at Eddie with complete trust and adoration on her face. He bends downs and places a kiss on the top of her head.

“I love you, my sweet boy.”

“I love you too, Mom.”

I don’t understand the weird screech of pain that leaves Mal’s mouth until I see the syringe sticking out of her chest, directly in her heart. A myriad of emotions dance across her face, but she lands on a smile at the end. Eddie pulls the now empty syringe out and tosses it away as he pulls Mal into his arms and lowers himself to the floor. All the guys quickly move to surround them.

“I-I just wanted to protect you all, my boys. I did what I thought was right. You know how much I love you all.”

Everyone is crying, except for Gray. He grabs one of Mal’s hands and places it between his own, so she focuses on him.

“We do understand that, Mal. The unfortunate part is that what you thought was right was incredibly wrong. We love you, but we’re going to move on with Rory now. I hope you find some way to rest peacefully knowing there isn’t anything you can do anymore. It’s over.” He gently places her hand beside her, stands up, and comes over to me and wraps his arm around my waist.

Mal is looking weaker by the second, fighting with everything she has to not let whatever was in that syringe take her. “You don’t deserve them,” she sneers, glaring at me.

I smile softly at her. “Maybe I do, maybe I don’t. You certainly never did though. Don’t worry about them. I’ve got them now.”

Anger flashes across her face, but she’s losing her battle. She looks like she’s struggling to swallow now, and we all remain silent as her eyes slowly close. They never open again.

The rest of the guys slowly get up and join Gray and me. I give them each a hug and soft kiss, hoping to convey how sorry I am. She was wicked and deserved this ending, but they didn’t. I vow then and there to make sure that the rest of our lives are immeasurably happier than the beginnings we all had.

Doctor Wade can’t help himself and starts examining my neck, but it doesn’t even really hurt anymore. “I’m fine. We can look at it later.”

“You’re not fine, and I’m going to fix it up now. Sit down, drink some water, and I’ll be right back.” He kisses me with such intensity that I have no choice but to follow his orders before I pass out.

Eddie is still sitting on the floor next to Mal. He isn’t touching her, just looking at her. I can’t help myself, so I lower myself to the floor too and scoot closer to him.
