“AmIsupposed to know what that means?” Sam asks.

Tilting my head, I look Sam over as he stands between my legs with his hands on my thighs. I could spend this time explaining the moments I’ve slipped into their lives and match up their morning with my vision, but there’s no point. I know what happened, and we have a timer on our time together.

“Why are you here?” I ask. “How’d this happen?” I tilt my chin to the locked door.

Sam runs his hands up my thighs, massaging my muscles. “You feel smaller,” he says.

I cover his hands with mine. “I’m better than I have been in months. How’d you get a conjugal visit?”

Sam looks to the door. “He’s outside the door, keeping watch.”

“Alex?” I raise an eyebrow.

“Yeah,” Sam confirms. “Row, how do you know him?”

“I don’t, really,” I huff. “Do you?”

“No,” Sam shakes his head. “He was one of the guys that wouldn’t let you come underground. Muscle for the AOE.”

“Seems like he let me,” I smirk.

“Found me the day after we came down,” Sam explains. “I was sure it was to tell me you were dead.”

Sam tucks some of my hair behind my ear and kisses my cheek. “Can we trust him?” he asks. “Have you seen anything?”

I take his hand and kiss the inside of his palm. “He said not to trust anyone. I’ve seen some things, but… nothing with Alex. Nothing that helps at all.”

“What about the kids? Anything of them… older?” Sam’s face blanches in anticipation, and I hate to shake my head and let him down, but I can’t lie.

“Not since coming down here,” I admit. “But that doesn’t mean…”

“If we die down here, we did everything we could,” Sam stops me. “But we have to make a plan to survive. We have to try. We’re first on the chopping block, and it’s a matter of time. This Eminent has left a mountain of dead bodies.”

My heart sinks with the flash of the body falling into the water, but I blink the image away. He sees it behind my eyes, the jolt of something terrible hiding in my mind, but he doesn’t ask.

“I know,” I say. “We’ll figure something out — make a plan. He’s dangerous, but seems to enjoy playing games with us.”

Sam nods, taking a deep breath, his hands moving over my body. He leans forward and brushes his lips against mine, pushing my fears away. “Alex said he’s taking a risk getting me thirty minutes with you,” he whispers into my mouth. “I’ve been begging him.”

I take his face with both hands, running my fingers through his hair, keeping him close. “Then we better make it count.”

Chapter Fourteen

The Visit

He’spullingmypantspast my hips while I lift, giving him permission without a word said between us. I’m wild for Sam, forgetting that Alex is just outside and the world may crumble in on us at any moment. I let go of his hair while he pulls my bottoms from my ankles, deliriously happy that for a short time, we can be this way, together again.

There are nights I could let Sam ravage me for hours, slow and meticulous, exploring every part of my body as if it was brand new to him. This won’t be like that, but the urgent need to have Sam inside me is just as exciting. It’s quick and vicious, full of all the passion that’s been boiling beneath the surface while they separated us.

My clothes hit the floor, and I cry out when his wet mouth finds my nipple. Reaching for the zipper under his neck, I yank it down, exposing his muscled chest, desperate to see him and feel his skin on mine.

Pulling it back over his shoulders, I feel the scar, but it’s when he holds me closer, kissing my neck, that I see it. I clutch at his shoulders, shocked by the awfulness. Digging my nails into his skin, I choke on the sob in the back of my throat.

“Sam, w-what happened?” His brand looks terrible, red and swollen, with a few stitches around the waves. I try to turn him around and get a better look, but he pulls away, grabbing my wrists in his large hands.

“It looks worse than it is,” he says.

“It looks like torture,” I cry. “What did they do to you?”
