“Don’t,” I snarled. “Unless you’re ready to tell me the whole truth about your connection to Elliot, then we have nothing else to talk about. Consider this my resignation from your services.”

And without another look at the woman who’d betrayed me, I walked out of the room, slamming the door behind me.

Chapter Fifty

The Blood Moon was full of life as we took over the entire spacefor the evening.

Elliot might not be caught yet, but we had taken far greater steps than any Faction before us. We had found one of his cohorts, we had them in custody, and now we would be able to track this man down and put this whole case to rest. It was cause for celebration—our team had earned it. The drinks flowed freely, laughter and high spirits filling the room with the most infectious energy, everyone couldn’t help but smile at each person they talked and laughed with. Music thumped around me as I pushed my way through the crowd, the bar within my sights.

“Can I get more water, Benji?” I slid my empty glass across to him.

He gave me his typical, flirtatious smile. “Of course, lovely.” He filled up the glass, even adding in a slice of lime like I enjoyed, mixing it all together.

I gripped the cold glass, stirring the drink before taking a few refreshing sips and turning back to the room. I took a moment to decompress from all the conversations I’d had since I arrived, trying my best to enjoy the moment even though my mind tried to wander to harder topics.

I fought to ignore thoughts of Vanessa, to not give her betrayal the power of my emotions. It was a night to celebrate, to spend time with my friends and their loved ones, not to think about what she had done.

Tomorrow, we would do the final questioning and get the truth. I just had to make it through until then.

Someone nudged into my shoulder, pulling my attention to Beckett standing to my left. “How you doing?”

“The best I can,” I answered honestly. He knew when I was lying, so it was never worth the effort. “This is helping distract me a bit.”

“Your pensive look before says otherwise,” he teased.

I rolled my eyes. “Can’t help that I’m a workaholic.”

“We’ll get him, Kas.” Beckett slung his arm over my shoulders pulling me into a warm side-hug, loosening the tightness in my chest.

“I know. We’ll crack her tomorrow. I know we will.”

He gave me a classic Beckett smile, full of hope and love and encouragement. “Well, looks like someone is ready to whisk you away.”

“What?”

He gestured with his free hand to Nolan heading our way, his eyes trained on his intended destination: me.

My heart flipped at the sight, pumping faster with each step he took. By the time he was in front of me, I was surprised it hadn’t burst from my chest. With Beckett’s hand on my shoulder, he could certainly hear the pick-up of my racing pulse.

“Hey, there,” Nolan said, his green eyes glimmering in the dimmed lighting around us, a teasing smile on his lips. “Would you honor me with a dance?” He gestured to the dance floor, the music slowing to a gentle song.

Beckett burst into laughter, his hand flying to cover his mouth.

“Shut it,” I mumbled.

“What’s so funny?” Nolan looked between us.

“I’m sorry,” Beckett wheezed. “You’ve just asked the one musician who somehow has no rhythm to dance with you.”

My shoulders hunched, my fingers tightening around my glass. “I’m not that bad.”

“As someone who has danced with you, I can honestly say, yes, you are that bad.”

“I just can’t time myself well, that’s all.” But Beckett was right; the last time we’d danced, I was surprised I didn’t break any of his toes with how many times I stepped on them.

“Maybe you just haven’t found the right partner to teach you.” Nolan swayed from side to side, his body perfectly timed to the music. “I’ve taught even the most helpless of dancers, so you couldn’t ask for a better partner.”

I cocked my head, suppressing a laugh. “Do you ever make attempts at humility?”
