“Oh,” Vanessa stopped in her tracks, her eyes wide as she stared at Nolan. “I see you brought a friend today.”

“Vanessa, this is Nolan.” I gestured to him, a sly smile spreading on Vanessa’s lips. “He’s just going to wait out here for me, if he’s allowed.”

“Oh, of course.” She looked between us. “Is everything alright?”

“Absolutely.” Nolan nodded, giving her one of his irritatingly charming smiles, eyes glistening in the harsh overhead light. “Somehow, I convinced Kasha to go out to lunch with me. I wasn’t going to give her an opportunity to take it back.” He winked, prompting me to roll my eyes.

Vanessa just laughed, smoothing her blouse. “Well, then, the sooner we start the session, the sooner you two can enjoy your day.” She opened the door wide, welcoming me back.

I turned my back to her, looking to Nolan. “I’ll be quick,” I said, only the two of us knowing the underlying meaning of the promise.

“Take all the time you need,” he said, leaning forward and placing a kiss on my cheek, my body flooding with heat at the gesture.

We had not discussedthat.

I stared at him wide-eyed, a smirk spreading on his lips at what I could only assume was a hilariously shocked expression on my face. Even in the middle of a mission, he found a reason to flirt.

Arrogant man.

I shook my head a few times, clearing it before turning and walking into the lion’s den that was Vanessa’s office.

She laughed, clicking the door shut behind us. “Seems a lot has happened in the past week.”

“You could say that,” I mumbled dropping into my normal seat.

“So, we established a while ago that things have been evolving between you and Nolan.” She took her seat, grabbing her journal and stilo from the table next to her, gently placing them in her lap. “But it seems you have become more intimate since then.”

My cheeks burned. “Yes.”

“What helped with such a change?”

I took a deep breath. Here we go. “Well, it all started at the last full moon.” I looked her straight in the eye. “I was able to transform.”

Her face brightened, eyes shining full of happiness. “Oh, Kasha, that is wonderful news. Such incredible progress…which is a testament to your strength and determination.”

“Thank you,” I mumbled. “But when I decided to, I asked Nolan to come along…”

Bile crawled in my throat as I started telling her about that night, a feeling of betrayal rising in my stomach at the idea of talking to a suspected traitor about such an important moment in my life. But I couldn’t do anything that might raise suspicion to her. If I suddenly closed myself off, unwilling to talk about things, she would question it. So, instead, I used my triumph as an excuse to prattle on, standing from my chair and beginning to move around the room.

I continued detailing the events, pacing between our two chairs, keeping my posture rigid. This wasn’t unusual for me, the desperate need to move as I talked about my emotions. But today was different; today, I was doing it on purpose. As I took my next turn, I mis-stepped, my thigh banging into the small table next to Vanessa, effectively spilling the glass of water right into her lap.

Perfect.

“Oh, Goddess!” I slapped my hands to my mouth as I stopped in my tracks, staring down at her. “I am so sorry!”

She just laughed, standing up as a pool of water dripped from her pants onto the floor. “It’s no bother, mistakes happen. I keep a set of clothes, just give me a moment to go to the changing room.”

“Do you have any towels I can use to clean this up?” I lifted a book from the table, as if trying to save it.

“Not in here.” She shook her head, pulling her soaked blouse away from her, the bright, shining fabric sticking to every curve of her body. “I’ll bring some back, though. I’ll just be five minutes.”

She gave me a gentle smile, reassuring me that my mistake was forgiven, before opening the door to her office. Silence fell in the space as she clicked the door closed.

I didn’t waste a moment, rushing right to her desk to begin my search.

“Five minutes,”I said to Nolan.“Keep a lookout and warn me as she gets closer.”

“Got it.”
