“Merry Christmas Eve,” I replied, not even sure if he was really with me.

“I have something I'd like to give you, before you change your mind.”

I ran my fingers through the curls on his chest, raising a suspicious eyebrow. William pulled away from me, leaning over the edge of the bed to search his trousers. His perfectly round bottom and sculpted legs my only view for a moment, and the heat prickled at my skin.

“What are you doing?” I asked. He pulled something from his pocket and came to sit beside me.

“Before you decide you don't love me anymore, before you decide you can't be with me, I have something I'd like to ask.”

“Yes?” My eyes widened, heart skipping.

“Marry me,” William said, opening a small velvet box with a gold ring inside.

The ring bore a rose cut emerald, nearly the same shade as his eyes. I sat up, pulling the covers over my bare chest, only partially aware of the tears pouring from my eyes. “What's wrong?” he asked urgently, closing the box of the delicate ring. I covered my mouth with my hand, the covers falling away as I came to my knees. William tried to pull me in for an embrace, but I pushed him back, peeling his fingers off the box with the ring—myring.

I took it from its cushioned home and slid it onto the third finger of my left hand. Looking at him, a stupid smile spread on my lips as I waved my fingers, the dazzling stone twinkling in the firelight. A shriek bubbled from my throat, my arms around his neck, and I kissed him. Our bodies were pressed together, every inch of bare skin against bare skin. William wrapped his arms around my waist, grabbing the flesh of my rear as he groaned with need, a sudden hardness pressing between my thighs.

“We're going to be married?” I asked in shock, his laugh reverberated through my body.

“Unless you're just going to run off with my ring, lovely Rosemary.”

“William!” I giggled through tears, taking his mouth once more. I kissed him as greedily as we had the night before, taking fistfuls of his hair in my hands, grinding on the length of him, slicking it with my need. One of his hands found my breasts.

He pulled me on top of him to straddle his hips. Guiding him to my entrance, I slowly lowered onto him, groaning as he filled me once more. His hips bucked, his hands gripping onto my own hips tightly as I rocked against him, pleasure fighting through the soreness.

There was a light rapping on the door.

“Fuck,” William hissed. I froze.

“Rose? Are you in there?” Mary's voice came, close to the door itself. I whimpered softly, he was throbbing inside me.

“Yes, Mary, I came home last night...” I replied shakily.

William’s grip on my hips tightened, and he began to move me against him. I could not contain my volume.

“Are your mother and father still at the Quinns as planned?” Mary asked, something in her tone. God, but I couldn’t bring myself to care.

“Yes,” I replied, my answer short and clipped, why could she not just leave? William sat up still inside me, gripping my breast and nibbling on my neck as he rocked in and out, liquid heat building.

“Well, child, let me come in and get you ready for the day. I've yet to hear of Mr. Blackwell's arrival and must have everything ready before then. Unlock your door.” William growled in my ear as he lifted me from him, quickly trying to find his clothes as Mary rattled the doorknob. I groaned, my feet finding the floor. I wrapped my arm around his bare waist to kiss him, his trousers suddenly on but unbuttoned. “Rosemary?”

“I’m quite tired, Mary, if you’d just leave me to rest, please,” I practically demanded, William laughed quietly, shaking his head.

“She won’t leave, I believe she thinks you’ve brought me home,” he whispered. I laughed at the audacity of it, at the fact it was so true and I could not fathom myself what had happened.

“What's so funny, child? Open the door now or I will!” Mary warned, completely suspicious. I chortled with anxious energy, William finished dressing himself and kissed me.

“I will see you in one half hour, arriving from the Quinns',” he winked, climbing out of my window. I heard the rattle of keys in the hallway.

“Rose!” Mary shouted.

“Wait! How will you get down from here?” I asked, peering over the windowsill. Surely he couldn’t jump.

“ROSEMARY, OPEN!” Mary urged. William beamed, leaping from the window, landing like a cat with a small jolt onto the snow. I gasped, how had he done that?

He only waved and jogged toward the woods behind our estate. Mary unlocked my door, stepping back when she saw me naked, in the middle of my room.

“I was in a rush to sleep last night,” I lied before she could ask.
