Still, overwrought, I began pulling garments from the drawers.

“Rosemary,” a familiar voice called, like crystal bells ringing. Terror seized me, coursing through my limbs like lead. The world was off kilter, time slowed to a crawl. “I can hear your absolutely terrified heart, dearest. Let me in,” she seductively purred, wiggling the door handle which rattled softly. After a moment she let out a small chuckle.

I began to pull the drawers out in haste, the sharp cracking of wood hitting the floor, clothes exploding everywhere. Where was the gun?

It was no use, for suddenly the door to our bedroom blew open with a crash, shattering into thousands of wooden splinters. It flew across the room and into the wall, clattering to the floor. I screamed, kneeling to protect my belly.

She walked in.

Noel, in an air of elegance and accomplishment, smoothed her skirts after her exertion. Her long slender fingers set themselves on her waist as she combed over our bedroom. Her gown was crimson, dark hair loose and curling around her bare, white neck. When her eyes settled on me, she smiled as if I were an old friend.

“Hello, sweet Rose,” Noel cooed. In a moment, she was an inch from my face, dark eyebrows furrowed. “What on earth is this?” She gently moved my hand from my stomach.

“Stand!” she demanded harshly.

Coming to my feet, I shook with horror. Noel undid my dressing gown, placing her hands on either side of my full-term belly. I continued to tremble, tears streaming down my face, throat tight.

“Please,” I whimpered. Her eyes snapped up to me, God, the vampyres were so animalistic.

“You look positively horrific! Whose child is this?” she asked, almost as quietly as I had been.

“William’s.”

“HA! How?” She began to pace the bedroom, the fingernail of her thumb in her mouth. “Surely not, I have never heard of vampyres breeding before.”

There was a quiet pause, “Interesting, is that why he’s gone and left you alone?”

“He’s retrieving Filip and Horris, they will be here any moment.” I threatened.

She was in front of me again, her hand suddenly around my neck, a smile spread on her red lips. I watched as her fangs appeared behind her lips, and in trying to remain composed, I knew this was it.

“Well, then, we mustn’t waste any time,” she smirked.

Noel picked me up by my throat, slinging me onto the bed. In my chest there was a sickening snap, a sudden stabbing somewhere inside. I cried out, the heavy breaths only making it worse. I could barely move from the affliction, and felt the baby twisting inside me, pushing against my womb. Noel stood above me on the bed, almost as if she was observing the reaction. I tried to reach around to protect the area from any more harm, tears blurring my vision.

“What do you want?” I cried angrily, spitting in her direction. She raised her eyebrows in disbelief.

“I take it William has not shared with you our past. Let me illuminate you, dear. William and I weretogether, so in love it was bliss. And then he broke my heart, Rosemary, just in the same way he will break yours, I am sure. He insults me by lying with you human whores and I won’t stand for it.” As she spoke, she leaned over me, twirling my hair in her hand. “I know I promised to visit you a little later in time, but you see, things change.” She was on the floor then pacing back and forth in a most casual manner. I tried to take deeper breaths but the pain was too great. The baby continued to swirl inside me and I worried it had been hurt.

“I have been observing dear William lately, following his patterns of being with you, without you, and whatnot. I watched as he failed to track me—Filip, too, the fool, he thought I didn’t know where he was, silly boy! IMadehim! But when William left yesterday, I thought today would be the best for my visit. A gamble, but I can see already well worth the risk.” Her sneer was serpentine.

“What do you plan to do?” I asked. Noel rolled her eyes and sighed. “Please if you kill me, leave my baby safely.”

“Rosemary, William and I were engaged to be married, what I wantisto kill you. To torment you in the way he has tormented me. Helovedme! He was going to make a life withmefor all eternity! But he chooses thesepathetichuman women instead!FOOL!” She slapped me, the pain burning across my skin, my hearing had all but gone out.

All I could register was the ringing.

After a moment, as I orientated myself once more, Noel sat beside me on the bed, running her hand along my stomach.

“I find this fascinating. This thing you are carrying in your womb–which seems to be holding on most decently–it is a halfling? A hybrid?” Noel’s brows were stitched in contemplation, and I fought the vomit to stay put as I looked over her. “Oh, what the Council would say!” She mused over that for a moment.

“The Council?” I whispered, distracted enough from the pain and terror to think of her next words. Noel snapped out of her thoughts.

“Yes, the Council! There surely will be some sort of punishment for him breaking the natural laws. Hm, what they could do to him I wonder,” she guffawed.

“No, Noel, if you have any sort of love in your heart for him—" I tried to adjust but the pain shot through my chest like fire.

“SHUT UP!” she yelled, mere centimeters from my face. I gasped, sucking breath in as she placed her hands on my cheeks and dug her nails into the skin. She opened her mouth, showing her fangs, truly sinister and predatory. My blood thickened, barely pumping.
