‘Christ, sorry.’ Ben immediately let him go.

‘Hah!’ Aleksey repossessed him. He was sneakier, and Ben kept forgetting that. He kissed Ben to stop any protests, sliding his hand down to find them both. Ben’s hand joined his, and they worked together, kissing, tasting, exploring, and all the while slowly pumping swollen members that slicked and slid between their strong fists. At last, knowing he was ready, feeling Ben’s equal thickening and pulsing, Aleksey pushed Ben’s thigh up and fed himself into the hot, ready body. Ben made a small groan of bliss and wrapped his arms tightly around Aleksey’s neck, matching the thrusting with arches of his hips. Finally, Aleksey made him demonstrate his remarkable flexibility. With more access, the hard spread buttocks were now his target and his landing pad. They started to bash the bed against the wall. But they were close, and he couldn’t stop. With a harsh grunt he felt his release start, a great flood of pleasure that he then washed into Ben. A final tug and Ben shot too, and all went quiet as they gently milked their final drops, and taut bodies melted together on the sticky aftermath of love.

These were the best times for both of them now.

In the before years, they would have still been unsatisfied, each regardless of the other’s need, only concerned about more, another round, fighting for dominance. In this dreamtime, which still enfolded them in its seductive embrace, they surrendered to a languid sense of peace where thoughts and feelings were shared more than bodies, and Aleksey knew that in this he was giving Ben the ultimate apology for what he had done to him. He was giving Ben the best of himself, some final core that he had held apart from all others in his life. It was a far more precious thing for him to share than another round of sex with his body.

Ben, beneath him, stroking through his hair as he lay boneless on him, suddenly asked, ‘Would you give up everything you have for me? Like that king did for her? Would you…abdicate?’

Aleksey chuckled. ‘Abdicate as Lord of Light Island? I’m—’

‘Is that what you’re calling yourself now? Oh, my God.’

‘That is what Iam. There’s a subtle, but very critical difference. Don’t worry, min skat, you are my LordLieutenant.’

‘Huh. I’m commissioned. Many of my old COs would be turning in their graves if they were dead. Well would you? Give up that and the houses and all your money for me?’

‘No.’ There was a silence. Aleksey waited contentedly then continued, amused, ‘Because I would not be giving anything up. You are seeing it all wrong. You are mylight, Ben. I have told you this. If I did not have you illuminating it, my life would be nothing but a dark illusion.’

Aleksey woke with a pounding head and lay thinking about this for some time. Ben was still in bed with him, breathing quietly somewhere in their tangle of limbs. When Ben suffered hangovers, he always professed he would never drink again, yet always did, but did not seem bothered about this one way or the other.

Aleksey was aware that he drank for other reasons and that therefore he had a different response to the effects—if he suffered them, which was rare. If he had woken with a headache in the before time, he would have counted the hours until he could re-seek the oblivion he sought. Lying in this hot, languorous weave of flesh now, he suddenly saw this for the folly it had been. He did not need or want the void. He had all he desired, and the trick now was hanging onto it. This level of deep and intelligent introspection appeared to wake Ben, who rolled over to regard him, and declared, ‘I’ve been thinking.’

‘You’ve been unconscious, you mean.’

‘No, I was awake and highly aware of my surroundings.’

Aleksey frowned. ‘I think that’s my line.’

Ben smirked and propped his head on his hand, idly playing with Aleksey’s nipple. ‘Why don’t we get Squeezy and Tim to fly home today and you and me sail back to the island for a few days on our own.’

‘The boat is due back in Penzance today.’

‘Yeah, I was thinking we could phone and see if we could extend it, but if we can’t, get a local crew here to sail it back for us, and we could rent another one here. Remember that film we watched with the sharks?’

‘Is it relevant whether I do or don’t?’

‘Very.’

‘Okay. Then yes, I remember it. Vividly.’

‘Well they were guys who sailed boats around to get them to their location, weren’t they. So it must be possible. And everyone sails here, I guess.’

‘Well, I cannot refute your plan then. It was in a movie.’

‘What do you think?’

‘I like the mention of great whites to give weight to your plan of us sailing alone to the island. That adds a certainje ne sais quoito the mix.’

Ben’s pleasant nipple game stopped. ‘They don’t have those here. That’s just Australia and places like that.’

‘I beg to differ.’

‘You didn’t tell me that before we left Penzance.’

‘No. But I did keep the dogs in the cabin. Did you not wonder why?’
