My crass words do nothing to abate her pleasure. Instead of being appalled, she grinds frantically against my hand, her passion escalating.

“If they hadn’t taken me away, I would have come for you. Not like I did, but as a sex-starved man that would have torn you away from everything and everyone you ever knew.”

“Oh, God—yes!”she screams out, her cunt tightening around my fingers as she creams all over them.

I watch her, fascinated by all her intricacies. How her chest heaves when she gasps. How her nose scrunches mid-orgasm.

She’s mine, and I’ll do anything to protect her. I’d kill a city full of the living and dead alike to keep her safe, because, at this point, there’s no going back. We are what we are, and if God and the heavens above have a problem with it, they’ll have to take it up with me. If anyone gets between me and Brooke, I won’t just kill them.

I’ll kill everyone they ever loved.

Pulling on the layers of protection so I can finally go out into the city shouldn’t fill me with dread. It’s what I’d wanted.

And yet, I can’t calm the butterflies in my gut.

I know Gabe will keep me safe. He’d walk through hell to save me. He’d damn an entire city.

“Does the kevlar really help against the dead?” I ask.

“Thickness and bulk help against the dead. If you ever find yourself needing to go out without thick clothes—which won’t ever happen—you can roll magazines up and tape them around your limbs. I don’t recommend it for mobility purposes, but it helps in a pinch.”

“Magazines, got it.”

“Don’t let your guard down for a sec.”

“High alert, always.”

“Stay away from the living. Sometimes they’re worse than the dead. And don’t go falling for any sob story. They’ll send women out, pretending to—”

“I’m not stupid!”

“Yeah, sorry.”

I take a deep breath, anxious to get this over with.

“You okay?” Gabe asks, concerned.

“Of course I’m okay,” I snap a little harsher than I intended to.

“You don’t have to do this.”

“But I do. When I go to this Keep of yours, I don’t want to have regrets, and if I don’t see what the world has become, I’ll never stop thinking about it.”

Gabriel wraps a belt around me that could rival Batman’s with all the pouches and sheathes it has for tools.

“Remember, you only want to use the smaller hunting knives—”

I cut him off with, “If they get really close.”

“I’m not kidding, Brooke. You can’t fuck around with these things.”

“I’m not suggesting I should, but you act like I’m going to run up to one and start hacking at it.”
