“When you said you were going to take care of me, I didn’t expect to have to get up at the ass crack of dawn,” she snaps.

“Don’t be giving me any of that circadian rhythm bullshit. Time doesn’t matter down here.”

“Obviously it does,” Remi fires back, her tone bratty, “or we wouldn’t know when to meet up.”

“You can go to bed whenever the fuck you want, eat whenever you damn well please, and sleep morning, noon, or night—except for the only hour a day you’re expected to fucking do something. So do it!”

Remi slumps. “I guess I am being difficult. I’ve just been so tired lately.” She cocks her head to the side. “Maybe I’m pregnant.”

Gage looks stricken as he pulls out a chair and guides Remi to sit. “It’s okay, baby. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have put so much on you. I’ll take you home right now so you can get some rest.”

Remi cackles with laughter, which seems to confuse Gage for all of a second.

“Yooouuuu’re not pregnant, are you?”

“Nope.”

“Jesus Christ!” Gage’s face contorts in utter frustration. “Just make sure she learns something.”

“That was brutal,” I say after he leaves.

“I’m so bored, which says a lot, considering I was hanging out in a closet for months. I live for giving him shit.”

“I don’t think I could ever be bored here, but admittedly, I’m still in the honeymoon stage of things.”

Finally, Alistair and Britney arrive. He’s wearing a good-natured grin. She’s dour-faced and pouty.

“Enjoy yourself,” he says. “I’ll make you whatever you want for lunch afterward.”

“You can go fuck right the hell off for all I care,” she snaps in return.

Defeated, he walks away.

“You know, Alistair is actually a pretty good guy,” Selina says quietly.

“Didn’t you get the memo?” Britney sneers. “There are no good men left in the world. Only mother fuckers.”

Selina grins. “I guess I can’t argue with that.”

“Are we ready, ladies?”

We look over and see the handsome wall of muscle that is Clint.

Britney immediately brightens. “Let’s get started.”

“Ah…” Remi says nervously, “I think Britney is plotting to kill Alistair.”

I laugh so hard I snort, but there’s a nagging feeling in the back of my head that tells me she’s not wrong.

GABRIEL

I stroll into the command post and slump into a chair. “What’s on the docket for today?”

Cole’s expression is somber.

“What’s up?”
