“Don’t get too comfortable.”

“Wh-what do you mean?”she asks, her voice worried.

“It means that come tomorrow, the kid gloves come off, and you’re going to see who your captors really are.”

THE OFFER

AMBER

I’ve made a mistake.

I let my guard down.

Forgetting my plan.

How am I supposed to get the upper hand on my captors when they’ll never trust me?

What Cole did to me was…I don’t have words for it. He made things make sense, though I wish he hadn’t, because now that I’ve had a taste of what he can do, I’ll forever be left in want.

Even under the best conditions, without locks and enemies, I’d still have to leave. Because there is no me withouthim.

I need to believe I can make it back to Seth, because otherwise, I’m as good as dead.

A part of me wants to tell Cole the situation, but I’m not sure how he’d handle it. He could promise to save my boy, only to bomb the shit out of the Reavers when I tell him where they’re located. Seth is simply too important to take risks with.

The door opens, and Cole steps into the holding, dressed in all black. I haven’t seen him looking like this since I was brought in, so I know something’s up.

He pulls over a chair and takes a seat outside my cell.

“We need to talk.”

I take the stool he sat in while molesting me and pull it in front of where he’s seated.

“Then talk.”

“How much do you know about where you’re at?”

I shrug. “Just that it’s underground and you have electricity.”

“Both true. It’s actually a bunker large enough for hundreds. I guess whoever made it wanted to ride out whatever was coming Noah’s Ark style.”

“I guess it’s pretty convenient you found it.”

“I didn’t find it. I worked here. Then I took it over. My men call themselves Keepers, and it shouldn’t come as a shocker that they’re keen on finding women. The ones we add here are called Kept, because we keep them well and they want for nothing within our reach. We have doctors, medical facilities, food to last a hundred years—everything we need.”

“Why are you telling me all this?”

“Because these are things I want you to know. You act like a little brat, protecting your monster boyfriend who would, in your words, beat a baby out of you, while I feed you three goddamn squares a day and leave you relatively unharmed.”

“Wow!” I say sarcastically. “Would you like an award? A pat on the fucking back?”

“No, but I would like some respect. A few answers.”

“I’m sorry to be the one to tell you, but I think you’re going to leave here disappointed.”

“We know Gunther wasn’t at the farm when we raided. We need to know where he was. How many people he has.”

“Funny how I don’t care.”
