We get to the fifth, and I hear voices coming from inside the room. The handle won’t budge, meaning whoever is in there probably doesn’t want to be.

After we take positions around the door, I set the butt of my rifle onto the handle, then smash it down, trying to make as little noise as possible.

The door flings open and we rush in, finding Christine and an armed man.

POP!

Gage takes the kill, then lowers his weapon. “You okay?”

Without even changing her expression, Christine replies, “Get me the fuck out of here.”

Nothing shakes that woman.

I nod towards the door. “Get Satan to safety.”

“Jesus Christ,” Christine mutters but exits with Gage.

I move deeper into the tunnel with the rest of the men at my back, eager to find the blonde-haired beauty I’m now beholden to, and I swear on all that is damned and holy, if she is harmed, I’ll raze every last mother fucker in this place.

I’ll probably do it, anyway.

Doors six, seven, and eight are empty, but as we’re about to go through nine, it opens, and an older woman steps out.

She screams, but Russ smashes the butt of his gun down on her nose.

“He hurt Patsy! That man hurt Patsy!” a shrill voice cries.

Looking inside the room, I see three small children and a woman that can’t be much older than Amber.

“Trent, secure the room,” I call over my shoulder, and continue on my pursuit.

The woman screams, and we lose the element of surprise. Doors open, and men pour into the hall.

POP!

POP!

POP!

My shoulder explodes with pain. I stagger backward, trying like hell to lift my weapon to return fire.

I look over to see Russ firing his pistol from the floor. Two of his men crumpled by his side.

This couldn’t have gone worse.

Unable to aim, I rush forward, closing the distance between me and our rivals, catching them off guard. I knock one clean to the ground, and as the others take aim at me, Dane and Blake pick them off.

Luckily, the bullet didn’t pierce my armor, and after a moment of rotating my shoulder, the pain subsides.

I look down at the man beneath me, who can’t be more than twenty, and close my hand around his throat. “Where the fuck is Amber?”

THE RECKONING

AMBER

It becomes suddenly clear that Cole was not about to let the Reavers have Christine and Russ’s daughter.
