“So terrible you had to go back.”

“For my son.”

After a long minute, he says, “I guess I can’t hold that against you, but that doesn’t make what you did okay. You will pay for your part in what happened to my girl.”

“No, she won’t,” Selina says, stepping in between me and the enraged man. “No one wanted this. It just fucking happened.”

“How could you, of all people, side with her!” Russ points towards me, furious.

“I’m not siding with her. I’m taking the side of the living, and she still has a pulse.”

“That little bitch—”

“Was fighting for her son. Just like you were fighting for your daughter. Let it go.”

“That’s easy for you to say. Your daughter is still breathing.”

“Nobody wanted this, Russ.”

Russ gets up from the rock he was sitting on and storms off into the woods.

“Hey!” Christine calls after him. “You’re still my patient.”

“The hell with it,” he shouts back. “Your bedside manners are shit.”

After they disappear, I clear my throat as I try to think up words that can mend the wounds between Selina and me.

“Hey, I want to thank you—”

“Save it for someone who cares,” she snaps, turning away.

“I, ah—”

She turns back and I see fire in her eyes. “You thought I did that for you?” She chuckles mockingly. “The last thing we need is war. Coming out here was a goddamn mistake.” She looks down at Seth. “But I’m glad you have your son back.”

I nod, recognizing that while we may never be friends, we at least have an understanding of what makes the other tick.

For the next several hours, I help as much as I can while tending to Seth, who panics if I leave his side.

“How would you like to become a nurse?” Christine asks casually.

“Ah, I didn’t think colleges were accepting applications.”

“They’re not. I am.”

“I don’t understand.”

“You have to know there’s a baby boom coming. With all the other accidents and aches and pains, I’m booked. I had a guy helping, but he faints at the sight of blood.”

“No one’s going to want my help. They all hate me.”

Christine smirks. “They hate me too.”

I cock my head to the side. “Why is that? I’ve heard them call you Satan on more than one occasion, but I could never figure out why.”

“It’s because I don’t adhere to the patriarchy and I’m not falling all over myself to suck their dicks.”

A slow grin spreads over my face. “You may just be my favorite person in all of the Keep.”
