“TV! TV!”

“Maybe if we put something on, we can have some alone time.” Cole winks.

“What is there to watch?”

“Oh, just about everything you could ever want.”

“God, you guys really do have everything.”

“Hurry and get something on. I’m hungry, and you’re my favorite meal.”

AMBER

Weeks Later

“I know they’re easy to confuse, but the most important thing you have to remember is to get the measurements correct,” Christine says as I pour the specified amount of solution into a cream base.

“You do realize I’m only a high school graduate and compounding medicines is not something I ever learned in chemistry.”

“Before coming here, I’d never compounded medicines outside of college labs. I had to read and learn how to do it myself.”

“Yeah, but you have medical experience! I’m going to kill someone.”

“No, you won’t. I’m bird-feeding you the information you have to know, and so far, you’ve done great. I just really need to emphasize the greatest risk, and that’s with measurements.”

I finish mixing the cream with the solution and begin the process of putting it into a tube.

When I’m done, she throws the tube into a basket. “Good job. You’ve just made your first prescription parasite killer.”

“Now, what?”

“You’re free to go. We’ll meet back here tomorrow to tackle indigestion.”

“Can’t we just raid a pharmacy?”

“We can, but we can’t let the craft die.”

I pull off my lab coat and head to the children’s area to watch Seth play with the other kids.

It’s hard to believe that the Keep exists and my son is so well provided for. He can grow up safe and cared for, which is what I want most in this world.

I get along with the other women well enough. Selina still regards me with coldness, and her friend Remi, who’s been here longer than any of the other Kept women, hardly speaks to me.

Brooke and I became fast friends, as we shared hardships the others simply cannot understand. Her with a vile man named Frank, and me, with Gunther. Suki is also kind to me, and we often get together so Seth and Hyun can play.

All in all, it’s a blessed existence.

Brooke approaches with Britney, who is the only woman here with a bad Keeper situation, as in she doesnotwant to be Kept.

“You look…happy,” I say to Brooke, whose eyes are dancing with excitement. “What’s up?”

“I’ll tell you after the others get here.”

“I didn’t realize we were having a meeting.” I frown because while we’ve managed to avoid drama, it’s always tense when all the women assemble. So much so that self-defense training has become a nightmare.

“Thingsaregetting better,” she insists. “Just relax. They know you’re not a threat.”
