Cole nods. “Then the only thing I have for you to do is get her knocked up.”

“If you’re not willing to get the job done, there are plenty of other men that would jump at the opportunity,” Cole says matter-of-factly.
“The Vulture situation—”
“Is getting handled.” He narrows his gaze at me. “We have one mission: to rebuild humanity. I don’t blame you for your hesitation. Britney is young, but so was Remi.”
“And Amber,” Gage interjects.
I don’t mention that Remi has yet to get pregnant because I know the point he’s trying to make.
Cole cuts Gage a glare but continues. “Humanity is almost wiped out. There are no guarantees we’ll even make it into the next decade. The best chance we have is turning out as many ankle biters as possible.”
He’s right. It might seem cruel that women have been reduced to baby makers, but there’s no telling how many people are left in the world.
And as evil as our sin is, at least the Kept are well taken care of.
I nod. “I get it.”
“Then get to fucking work.”

WE HAVE A DEAL
BRITNEY
Being around the other women of the Keep drains me. They talk about their Keepers with too much adoration for my taste, choosing to remain blind to the atrocities committed against them. They decorate their gilded cages instead of gnawing at the bars.
Still, I can’t bring myself to hate them, and when I’m being honest with myself, I’ll admit that I’m jealous.
They feel true joy, which is a foreign concept to me at this point.
After reentering my apartment, I take out the one comfort I have in this world and mix it with a cup of orange juice.
It’s not every day that I get blackout wasted, but if there ever was a need, it would be today.
I take a sip of my drink, trying to drift away to a world that’s not so dead.
But I’m not that lucky.
The new girl, Georgia, made everything worse. I don’t begrudge her sharp tongue or no-nonsense attitude. If anything, those qualities made her a suitable match for Dane, who she seemingly has tamed.
I take another sip and let out a long breath.
Fuck Georgia. Fuck her straight to hell.
I take another sip.
While I may seem unreasonable, she’s the one that led me to this moment. Her and the knowledge of what I must do tonight.
