God, this was so much easier when I didn’t see him as a person.

He looks at me, rage simmering just beneath the surface.“Whyare you here?”

I take a sip of my drink, gathering my courage. “I’ve come to negotiate.”

“Negotiate?” Alistair scoffs. “For what? Your every need is taken care of.”

“How old are you?” I ask, curious.

“Huh?”

“I’ve never asked you your age.”

“I’m twenty eight. What does it matter?”

“I was just wondering. I guess I have a lot of questions about you.”

“Why? What does it even matter when you can’t stand to be in the same room as me?”

“I’d like to make a deal.”

His Adam’s apple bobs as he swallows. “To be honest, I’m not really in the mood.”

“I’ll let you fuck me.”

That gets his attention.

“What kind of trouble have you gotten yourself into?” he says darkly. “This is the goddamn Keep, for Christ’s sake—the safest place you could be.”

“Huh?”

“Don’t go acting confused. I don’t believe you’d fuck me unless you were under extreme duress.”

“Yeah…I kind of am…”

His hand clenches. “Did somebody hurt you?”

“Yes…”

“Tell me who and I’ll fucking—”

“My father.” I downcast my eyes. “It was my father.”

“Oh…” His breathing steadies. “I don’t know what to say to that except that I’m sorry.”

A slight feeling of warmth threatens to overwhelm my heart, but I snuff it out. I’m here on business.

“I need your help, and in exchange, I’ll let you do whatever you want to me. You can put it anywhere.”

He blinks, saying nothing.

“Look, if I weren’t so desperate, I wouldn’t have come to you.”

“How are you desperate when your father isn’t even here?”

“If I tell you, you have to make me a promise.”

“What promise?”
