He looks at me long and hard and in a way that makes me feel like he’s seeing deep inside me, to the parts that I hide even from myself. Then, he extends his hand toward me.
We shake.
A soft smile curls on his lips. “Looks like we have a deal.”

I’VE COME TO COLLECT
ALISTAIR
Walking into the command post, I’m surprised to see Dane in his Walmart scooter.
He casts me a stern gaze that suggests I’m not on the invite list.
“Am I interrupting something?”
“Nothing important.” Cole leans back in his chair, folding his arms over his chest. “What do you want?”
“I was hoping to go to the outer edge of the east side today.”
“Why the fuck would you want to go there?” Cole barks.
“It’s, ah, trip for the lady.”
“Then I wouldn’t go.” Dane chuckles. “That girl wants you dead.”
“Fuck off!”
“I think I’ll fuck around right here,” Dane shoots back.
Is it bad to knock a guy in need of mobility assistance on his fucking ass?
Before I can think it through, Cole says, “Dane, you’re dismissed.”
I move aside, allowing him to scoot his disrespectful ass out of the room.
After the door closes, Cole says, “What the fuck does your girl want?”
“She wants me to stop by her old place and pick up a few things,” I lie.
“Absolutely not.”
I spike a brow. “You let people go out to pick things up all the time.”
“We’ve had a few allies die and a few more turn up missing. Plus, there are murders happening around the area. We’re not taking needless risks anymore.”
“This isn’t a needless risk.”
“What the fuck does she have there that we’d want? A generator? Antibiotics?”
“Dumb shit, but if I go and get it for her, we’ll…get along better.”
“She’ll let you fuck her, is that it?”
I respond with silence.
