“But there’s usually a clear reason. One would assume that during times like these, it would be for resources. But this killer has been leaving behind valuable items. Things normal people would take. They’re also not after territory, because they work in the shadows and make no demands.”

“And you’re sure it’s not a Vulture?”

“They’d never. Most of them would fuck anything that moved, and that’s literal. On one of the corners we have surveillance up, Atticus saw one fucking a rager. Has a video of it.”

My brow lifts in shock. “No-fucking-way…”

“Desperate times, but I’m getting away from the point I’m trying to make. The east side is dangerous. Go with Hunter, get whatever it is Britney wants, and get your ass back here and fuck her good.”

“Sure thing, boss.”

I waste no time jogging to where I’m supposed to meet Hunter. Luckily, he was near the area and glad to accompany me, because he was so bored.

In the months we’ve been a part of the Keep, we’ve hardly gotten to know each other, and judging by his stern expression, I don’t think that’s about to change. He’d worked in special forces before being recruited by Saber and prefers roaming the streets more than enjoying the creature comforts of the Keep. When Cole needed eyes topside, he was the first one to scout.

“How’s it been out here?” I ask. “Cole’s been keeping me close to base.”

“The world is shifting,” he says, keeping his eyes straight ahead. “Less dead, but a lot more assholes.” He takes out his sword and slices through the head of an incoming rager to the right. I make swift work of two coming from the left.

“How so?” I carry on like nothing’s happened.

“It used to be the dead was the biggest threat. Now, not so much.”

“Salem Street really was fucked up.”

“Oh, I’m not even talking about Salem. I’m pretty sure that was a one-off, done by someone bent on revenge.”

“How can you tell?”

“They weren’t just executed. They were tortured. Mutilated. Then hanged for the world to see.”

I don’t ask him how he knows, but I trust that it’s the truth. He’s seen a lot more of what’s going on than I have.

“So why exactly are we going out to Chapel?” Hunter asks.

I truly detest lying, but I’m not ready to tell Hunter about Maisy yet. In case he decides we need to tell Cole.

“To pick up some things for Brit.”

“Why do I get the feeling it’s more than that?”

“I don’t know. Why do you?”

“The way your eyes darted to the side when you answered me.”

I could lie, but we’re close enough to house number twelve that the truth doesn’t feel like such a risk.

“I’m picking up Britney’s sister to bring to the Keep.”

Hunter stops dead in his tracks. “Her sister?”

“She’s with her father…and it’s a bad situation.”

“Her father sold her, didn’t he?”

I lick my lips, unsure of what to say.

“What d’ya gonna do to him?”
