His brow pinches in confusion.
“You owe your daughter a debt, and I’ve come to collect.”
“P-p-please…”
I grab his hand and pull it towards me as I take my hunting knife out of my belt. “The good news is that I’m not going to kill you. The bad news is that you’ll wish I had.”
“N-n-n-NOOOOOO.”
For the next hour, I slowly flay skin from muscle, and I emphasize slowly.
I want him to feel every agonizing stroke of my knife.
True to my word, I leave him alive, praying to any god who will listen to wash away my sin.
A part of me wants to lay this at Hunter’s feet. If it weren’t for him, I would have never taken it as far as I had.
But honestly, I loved every moment, and I’d do it again.
Hunter and Maisy are outside a few houses over, playing on a swing set.
“You all right?” Hunter asks with a cocky grin.
“I’m something, and it ain’t exactly good.”
“You did what needed to be done. Now let’s get the kid back to the Keep for inspection.”

MAISY
BRITNEY
Sitting in the cafeteria with the other women, I feel sick. Hardly able to breathe.
Alistair left early this morning, telling me he wasn’t coming home without Maisy. And I believe him.
But what if she’s not alive? Or what if he can’t find her?
I should have told him about her months ago, but I was a fool, thinking the worst of these men that try so hard to keep us safe.
Are you really buying into this bullshit?
The irony is not lost on me.
I shouldn’t have left the apartment, but I didn’t want to be alone while I waited for news on my sister. It’s not easy keeping company with happy, content women with what I’m going through, and I make little attempt to engage them.
To make matters worse, I tell them nothing. This burden is mine alone, and the weight of it is crushing.
“Earth to Britney?” Selina says, waving her hand in my face.
“I’m sorry, what?”
“What job do you want?”
I roll my eyes. “That again?”
“We all have to chip in and do something. It’s the only way we can demand more freedom.”
