“To be honest, I want him tortured for you. I hate this world and what it’s done to us. I hated my stepmother and the only regret I have is that it wasn’t me who’d killed her.”

“But that was yourstepmother. This was my father, from birth—”

“From birth to the very day he led you to Frank.”

“So you don’t think I should be ashamed?”

“Hell, nah, and you shouldn’t let it ruin your joy. You have a good thing with Alistair, and I think if any other man had claimed you, you’d have…I don’t know, gone crazy.”

I chuckle. “You’re probably right. Alistair was patient, and he treated me well, despite how bratty I was.”

“Grrrl, you were driving us all insane, but I get it. You had a lot on your mind. Now, you have Maisy, and you no longer have to worry about anything other than what’s safe under this roof.”

“You’re right, and I guess I should probably tell him that.” I frown. “He’s probably freaked out that I ran off. I feel terrible.”

“He’ll understand.”

“Thanks for letting me crash here, and tell your brother I’m sorry for interrupting.”

“Seriously!”

I laugh. “Forgive me. I couldn’t help myself.”

“It’s all good. Now go get your Keeper.” She gives me a wink, and I rush to find Alistair.

I check our apartment, the cafeteria, the gym, and a dozen other places before going to the command post, where the men typically hang out if they’re stationed inside the Keep.

I walk in through the open door and see Cole looking at files with Atticus.

“Hey, have you seen Alistair?” I ask, offering as sweet a smile as I can muster.

Cole lifts his brow. “Why are you looking?”

“Because I can’t find him.”

Cole and Atticus exchange knowing glances.

My heart begins to race. “What happened to him? Is he okay?”

“He’s fine,” Cole says, getting up from his seat and coming around the table. “But I thought you were…quarreling.”

I blink back at him, remembering how the night went.

“It, ah, wasn’t a quarrel. I had a lot to think about, and now that I’ve had time to reflect and realize I’ve been a little…bratty, as Brooke would say, I’m hoping to amend that.”

“Well, that’s all good and great, except that you’re going to have to wait. He’s out on assignment.”

“Will he be back tonight?”

“No, actually. It might be a few weeks.”

All at once, I’m overcome with fury. “A few weeks? What the hell are you having him do? I thought—”

Cole cuts me off. “He volunteered.”

“Why would he do that?”

“Because he thought you hated him for what he did to your father.”
