Alistair:He told her he’d take her to me and had her hide inside the trash.

Cole:Shit…

Alistair:I’m just glad she’s okay.

Cole:Should I send a chopper to come get you?

Alistair:If you could give me a few days alone with her, I’d much appreciate it.

Cole:Alone?

I look over my shoulder as Hunter exits the apartment.

Alistair:You don’t have to worry about Hunter anymore. The situation took care of itself.

Cole:Oh…

Alistair:Just give us a few days and we’ll come in, then I can tell you everything.

Cole:At least tell me where their base is.

Alistair:Near here, Walnut street, catty-corner from the tire factory, though they’ll probably scatter.

Cole:Brit’s been asking about you.

Alistair:Would have been nice if you’d told me.

Cole:Couldn’t risk the mission.I’ll have Atticus reset the scanners so Caspian loses access to the safe houses, but be careful. If he wants in, he’ll just break the doors down.

Alistair:I’ll be mindful.

Cole:Good luck with the misses.

Chapter17

HIS KEPT

BRITNEY

Istretch my limbs as I wake, shooting up in bed when I realize I’m not alone.

Alistair gives me a lazy smile. His dark eyes are soft and warm, but they do little to calm my nerves.

I look around, frantic. “Is this real? Are we really here? And where is here?”

“Here is safe,” Alistair says, propping himself up on his elbow. “I’ve missed you,”

“You’re all I’ve thought about. I can’t believe I was stupid enough to run away that night after your confession.”

He chuckles. “Running to Brooke’s apartment is hardly overreacting. And I can understand why you took issue with me. What I did was…well, it was severe.”

“That didn’t bother me.”

“Then what was the issue?”

I suck in a breath, unsure if I should actually be confessing this bold, dark part of me. “That I’d liked hearing about it.”

“Oh…”
