Britney manages a tight smile. “Thank you for allowing us the night.”

“You can ask Amber what it’s like,” Cole offers. “She’s a seasoned criminal.”

Britney nods. “Do you need anything else from me?”

“You’re free to go. Tomorrow, once you’ve been taken in, I’ll have Atticus come down and take your statement. We’re going to need every detail you can remember, though I doubt they’ll help much, as the Vultures have already scattered.”

Britney nods.

“Now get out of my sight so I can speak with your Keeper.”

I rise to embrace Britney, who practically melts in my arms.

“Don’t worry,” she whispers. “You’ll always be my Keeper.”

Watching Britney walk out the door makes my heart sink. We’re finally on the right path, and now this. Thirty fucking days apart.

Once I’m alone with Cole, I let my fury bubble to the surface.

“Are you fucking kidding me? Thirty goddamn days in the pen? And for what? What the fuck do you think it’s going to prove?”

Cole crosses his arms over his chest and closes the distance between us with one step.

“Boy, if you don’t stop your goddamn tantrum this instant, I am going to lay you flat.”

I would be stupid not to heed his warning. Even if we are evenly matched, I don’t need the headache that’ll come from an in-Keep feud.

“Just promise me she’ll be taken care of.”

“You know she will be.”

Cole grabs a remote and brings up a map of the town. “We flew a drone over the area you said they were at, and this is what we found.”

He brings the image to focus, and I see that in the middle of the street, the words,‘We’re coming…’are spray painted.

“Jesus Christ…”

“I’m going to reach out to Russ in hopes he’ll help me with the threat, but I’m curious about that Vulture friend you said Hunter had.”

“His name is Cain, and I’m not exactly sure how to get ahold of him.”

“Do you know how many there were, exactly?”

“Britney said at least four dozen, and that’s not including the women.”

“Now you’re talking.”

“She said they were…rough.”

“We might be able to work with that.”

“How’s the woman we sent back here? Gloria, was her name.”

Cole snickers. “You’re not going to believe this, but she was a molecular biologist.”

“Was.”

“Is, actually. I worked out an arrangement where she can stay and help us study the virus without having to take a partner.”
