I struggled to get my brain to work through the haze of desire. “What’s me?”

“When we touched skin to skin…” His eyes searched mine as if I should understand what he was saying. “My wolf recognized you.” He swallowed, then whispered, “You’re my mate.”

That pierced right through the passion and had me pushing him away. “What? That’s impossible.”

A muscle jumped in his cheek. “Apparently, it’s not.”

“What are we going to do?” I shook my head. “I’m a witch.”

“And I’m a werewolf.” He frowned. “What’s that got to do with anything?”

I rubbed my temple. “This has to be a mistake. Lillian said witches are forbidden to mingle with werewolves. If we ever had kids, shifters with witch blood are too powerful. It’s dangerous.”

“I don’t know what to tell you. Fate says Lillian is wrong.” He raked his fingers back through his hair. “This has never happened to me before. It’s not a fucking mistake.” His gaze locked on mine. “You’re the other half of my soul.”

This was too much. My chest heaved as I struggled to catch my breath. “No one is going to accept our leadership if the first thing we do is break some cardinal rule that was put in place to protect us. The coven and your pack can live in peace because neither of us can overpower the other.”

“And we won’t.”

I sighed. “But if we had children, they might.”

“This is about kids?” He looked up at the roof of the car. “What if Fate paired us together to unite our power?” He focused on me again. “Think about it, Ruby. Maybe Fate chose you for me to help us overcome the Coven of Shadows.”

Could that be true?

I felt like he was racing miles ahead of me and I was still stumbling over Fate tying me to a werewolf. I hadn’t even told him what had happened in Boston.

To be fair, I’d never told anyone.

I lifted my eyes and studied the hard lines of his face. He was older than I was. I wasn’t sure by how much, though. Werewolves didn’t age like humans. Mathias looked younger than Lillian, but I knew he was in his nineties, at least ten or fifteen years older than she was.

Zeke’s features were chiseled, but his green eyes were kind—at least they were when he looked at me. I didn’t know him other than our conversations tonight. I hadn’t even learned his last name until he’d introduced himself to Amelia at the hospital. How could I possibly be his mate?

I squeezed his hand. “I don’t have the instincts you do.”

My words landed like a water balloon full of swamp water. He slid his hand free of mine and stared out the passenger window. “I get it.”

I frowned and shook my head. “I don’t think you do.”

He looked back at me, narrowing his eyes. “You can spare me the whole ‘it’s me, not you’ speech. I’m a werewolf, and you’d rather kiss a frog than break some rule about wolves and witches.”

My eyes widened as my jaw dropped in disbelief. “Wow. You are miles off base.”

“Enlighten me.” He narrowed his eyes.

I crossed my arms. “First, I wasn’t saying I didn’t believe you, and I definitely wasn’t saying I didn’t enjoy every second of that kiss.” I paused, but he didn’t react. Fine. I plowed forward. “What I meant was, I don’t have a wolf inside saying you’re the only person I will ever love. To me, you’re still a guy I just met this morning.”

“Are you telling me I should buy you flowers and take you on more dates?”

I laughed, shaking my head. “I’m saying we barely know each other, and we’ve got the added complication right now of our elders pushing us to be leaders.” His expression didn’t lighten. I sighed. “Please don’t make me dig deeper.”

His brows pinched together. “If this is about the werewolf in Boston, I’ll never hurt you, Ruby.”

I did love the way my name sounded in his deep raspy voice. I swallowed the lump in my throat as I met his eyes. “I’ve never told anyone about that night.” He put his hand out with his palm up. I stared at it for a moment before tentatively placing mine inside. Our fingers laced together, sending a zing of power through my entire body. I lifted my gaze. “I don’t even know where to start.”

“How did you know he was a werewolf?”

“He was too strong to be human, and…he called himself a wolf.”
