I squeezed his hand. “I know a guy who works at the hospital. He might be able to get me some antibiotic samples or something.”

Mathias placed his other hand on top of mine, patting it. His skin was hot, feverish. “First, we need to talk. Find Kiefer.”

“Kiefer?” I frowned. “Let me get the medicine first. We can talk later.”

“No.” His voice carried the Alpha compulsion, calling to my wolf to obey. “This can’t wait.”

Fuck. He needed medicine, but instead, I would be dragging Kiefer over here. I rubbed a hand down my face. “Stubborn old man.”

He chuckled and winced. “I’m not dead yet.”

I shook my head. “We’re not going to let you die.”

His amber eyes didn’t have the inner fire they usually did, but the intensity of his will was plain to see. “Bring Kiefer.”

“Okay. I’ll be back soon.”

I looked up to find Ruby collecting the incense burner and some of the crystals on the windowsill. I looked over at Lillian. “Can you stay with him until I get back?”

Ruby looked back as Lillian nodded. “Of course.” She looked over at Ruby. “You don’t mind, do you?”

“No.” Ruby’s pulse picked up. She was lying. Her gaze met mine. “It won’t take long, right?”

I shrugged. “I’m not sure. Depends on Kiefer.”

She stopped at Lillian’s side. “It’ll be fine.”

“Good.” I straightened up, sliding my hand free of my Alpha’s weak grasp. His eyes were closed again. “I’ll be back soon.”

I pulled out my cell phone as I left the master bedroom and scrolled through my contacts until I found Kiefer. I pressed his name and jogged down the stairs. He answered on the second ring.

“Hey, Zeke. How’s Mathias?”

“Not great. He has a fever.”

“Shit.” Kiefer groaned. “What are we going to do?”

“I think I can get some antibiotics for him, but you need to get your ass over here. He wants to talk to us first.”

“I can be there in fifteen minutes.”

“Good. See you then.” I ended the call and went out through the front door. I needed some fresh air. Plus, I could get to work on finding our Alpha some meds without him hearing me.

I glanced up at the window and shook my head. “Hang in there, old man.”

He would. But I was worried. I’d never seen, Mathias so weak, and if I lost him now…

I pushed the thought out of my head. Death wasn’t an option.

CHAPTER 3

Ruby

Zeke left themaster bedroom, and I looked over at Lillian. “Is there anything I can do to help?”

She shook her head, meeting my eyes. “I’ve healed the external wounds, but the infection in his blood needs antibiotics.” She pressed her lips together and motioned toward the bathroom. I followed, and she closed the door behind us before turning on the faucet on the sink. Despite the noise, she kept her voice just above a whisper. “As my apprentice, I need to be certain you understand what’s at stake in this situation.”

“Okay.”
