“You want to know something?” He asks, his eyes turned, almost sad.
I turn back around fully. “What’s that?”
“I think I love you…”
I smile. “I think you do, too.”
Chapter 24
Tony
Wakingupisalwayssuch a task. My mind registers the pain I’m feeling from my shoulder, but I shrug it off, because it’s not bad enough to worry. I’ve been through worse. Much worse.
The pain is more of a slow dull ache now. Not the burning pain that paralyzed me a few days back.
But… it’s time.
I know it’s time.
I crack my eyes open cautiously. She’s lying next to me but I don’t believe for a second she’s been here all night. There’s something she’s hiding. The fact that her face is all made up. The fact that I felt her stir not twenty minutes ago.
She was pretending to be asleep.
The feeling of me returning to my body seems to sharpen my focus. My bare chest was still swathed in bandages. I’m definitely getting too old for this.
The silk sheets pool around my waist and I can feel a warm hand press against my lower stomach. I turn my head to her and smile.
“Hey," I smile at her.
"Hi." She smiles back at me.
There’s tears in my eyes. I don’t think it’s possible to hold back the emotion anymore. So much fighting, so much pain, so much heartbreak and suffering to get to this one moment.
“Today’s the day…” I mumble, sitting up.
She nods. “Today’s the day…”
It didn’t take long for us to latch onto each other in our strongest embrace yet.
Fuck the pain.
"Aria..." I start, sniffling. "We...we made it."
"Yeah..." I reply, trying to hold back the emotion. "We did.”
I pull her head from my shoulder and look her square in the face. I can’t help but smile. We both try to wipe the tears from the other’s face, but they continue to flow.
I’m not sure if either of us care how emotional we’re being. It’s the end of an era.
"I love you," we say in unison.
I don’t think either of us could have taken it a second longer. I pull her face to mine and our lips connect with a fiery blast.
It’s perfect.
I cup her cheek and her arms lock tightly around my neck. We’re in ecstasy.
Just in this moment.
