What’s the point?

I take a calming breath.

Breathe…

Just breathe…

As soon as she leaves, I jerk and tug at the links around my waist, growling at the fact that they’re there. How the hell am I supposed to get out of here?! I growl and pull at my waist but my finger catches something…

A ridge in the welding between two links…

It seems weak…

I know what I need to do…

I’m going to break the welded joint…snap the chain in half…

I lift myself so that I’m standing and tighten the bulky chain against my ribcage. I take an encouraging deep breath before throwing myself against the edge of one of the tables.

Not once.

Not twice.

Not three or six times…

Seven.

Lucky number seven.

Crack!

There’s a blinding pain I haven’t felt in a while. My ribs are broken! It’s a pain that’s so intense…that I nearly black out. It throbs and beacons me to stop, but I can’t. I know I have to ignore it. I stagger to sit upright, my lungs working overtime. My eyes watering.

I bite my hand to stifle the scream that lunges from the trenches as soon as I pull the broken chains away from my body. I worry for a moment, when its tight links still firmly hold onto my body, but I continue to push, tears streaming freely now.

I muster what’s left of my energy and unsteadily sway toward the door, gripping my side with everything I’m worth. It’s locked. It has to be. But even if it is, I have to try.

I can do this.

I know I can.

I can come up with something.

I reach out and tighten my fist around the handle, tugging the latch with a low moan. It clicks open.

It’s…unlocked….

The shrill excitement that lunges from my gut causes my ribs to explode in nothing but agonizing heat. I crumple over, catching myself against the door frame, struggling to breathe.

My eyes widen and my breath catches in my throat. There’s no fucking way…

I hold my breath as I close the door behind me and dart down the corridor. It’s dark. Stinks like shit. I wonder where the hell we are. I wonder how far I’ll have to go before I find a phone, or someone to give me one.

My feet pound and I run.

All the way outside…

I hear the double doors of the market slam as I fling my body through the doors and run into the open gravel lot. It’s far off from the road.Too far…
