It doesn’t take long before bullets fly past my head again.

“Get down!” Luigi yells, swinging around, blasting fire in the direction the gunfire’s coming from.

Sweat drips from my brow. I flick it out of my eyes, bending my knees as I slide into a crouch. My eyes are fixed down the hall. There’s three men. The Morino-Lorenzo clan outnumbers them by double. But they have the fire power that I bet we don’t.

“I don’t have a gun!” I yell to Frankie.

He shrugs. “Me either!”

Luigi is the only one firing, that’s when I know we’re all out…

“Fuck!” I growl.

We’re sitting ducks without fire power. “Here!” Luigi yells, still firing with one hand, the other grabbing another gun from behind his belt. He tosses it to me. “Get him out of here!”

I’m not sure if Luigi feels responsible for him as a child, or if he’s protecting him for a different reason…

He would make the obvious choice in replacing Aria if anything were to happen. She’s Morino-Lorenzo, sure…by marriage…

But Alessandro…

All the kids…

They have both the bloodlines…

As soon as I stand to shoot, an explosion blows me off my feet. The windows and doors rip open. The pressure is so intense that it throws me into the wall. The ringing in my ears won’t let up even as I crawl to my knees and blink back the bright spots in front of my eyes.

“Fuck….” I can’t see. Holding my gun out in front of me with one hand, I wipe at my face with the other. I can’t see! There’s a body next to me. It’s unmoving.

I close my eyes and pray that it’s not Alessandro.

There’s a stench of blood in the air, and I’m not sure if it’s coming from me or if it’s others are bleeding out after the explosion.

I open my eyes again, trying to steady my vision. I groan, as I grasp a hold of the body next to me.

It is Alessandro…

I shake his shoulders. “Wake the fuck up!!” I cry out, panicked. There’s fire everywhere. The ceiling… the debris…

There’s small little camp fires all around us. The heat is strong, and I can’t even begin to think about how much worse it’ll be if the entire place goes up in flames.

Everywhere men were screaming or yelling incoherent things. I look all around. There’s a mountain of ceiling beams all around, dividing us from the rest of the men. How the hell did none of that land on us?!

Glass and metal all around us, I try to gather him up. “Alessandro!” I scream again.

He’s still not moving.

There’s debris on top of him from the ceiling. Luckily, just glass and pieces of drop ceiling. Doesn’t look like anything overly damaging. I check over his body. It doesn’t look like there are any serious wounds. Not that I can see anyway. His shirt is drenched in blood, but I don’t think any of it is his. I bend down and check his pulse, and immediately sigh in relief. His heartbeat is strong. I smack him across the face. “Wake up!” I bellow. He snaps his head up and his eyes fly open.

He looks around, his eyes wide. “What the hell was that?!”

“I don’t know…” I breathe, grabbing his arm. “But we need to get out of here…”

He pushes me off violently. “Leave me here!” He screams.

“No!” I bite. “Your family needs you, dumbass! Let’s go!”

I don’t want to hurt him.
