“Well, more than that. They wanted me to see them. So I went out after them. I was so pissed off. I got so angry at them for messing with us and making us crash. Ruining the front of the car, and—” now he pauses. Swallows. “I got so angry at them for putting you in danger.”

My heart fucking floods with whatever the hell makes a womanswoon.

“I went out after them. They led me out into the car park.”

“Why’d you do that?” I blurt. “It could’ve been a trap. It could’ve been something to hurt you. They could have—”

“Done many things,” Sebastian says, cutting me off. “And once I was way out there, by the last truck. I realized I’d left the most important thing back at the gas station.”

“The van?” I say.

Sebastian doesn’t say anything; he just stares at me like I’m the stupid one for once. And I am. I go bright red.

He meant me…

“I ran back to you… The van. I thought maybe that was the trap. But it wasn’t. It was all just a message. A message I”ve been trying to puzzle out. A message that I think Carlos might know.”

“Of course,” I utter. “I suppose it was too good to be true, there being trouble without his cause.”

“Now I don’t know,” Sebastian says, defending him. “I’m just guessing because of the note.”

“What note?” I snap.

Sebastian is searching his mind for the correct response. He can see my neck bulging and my temple flashing with a pulsing vein. I’ve gone from zero to one hundred over my damn brother.

That’s when the car horn blares.

And another.

A car comes veering across our lane, and Sebastian slams on the brakes, throwing me forward in my seat. I strain against the seatbelt and grab for the dash. Sebastian then swerves to the left and lets the car swing out on the right.

It’s the men from the car! The Russians that Seb’s been paranoid over. They’re laughing, and they swing back across at us. Sebastian swears and breaks and heads the other way. He accelerates down the emergency shoulder, and we overtake cars on the right hand side. We swing back out into traffic, and he looks over his left shoulder to see them coming up. The two men wave and smile.

“What the actual fuck?” Sebastian barks. He heads to the right and they follow him. The men close in, we can only get so close to the emergency shoulder…

The men are right next to us now. Pointing at the front end of our car and having some damn conversation about how to get us off the road. They begin slowing.

“Fuck that!” Sebastian snaps. He edges at them and rams them away.

The two men are furious. They gesture at us and the car.

“You think that’s a fucking problem?” Sebastian yells. “They're trying to ram us off the road. What the hell is this?” He changes gears and lanes, threading over to the edge.

“I don’t think they’re the same Russians we’re doing a deal with,” I say. It seems like the only logical thing to do.

Sebastian just grunts and continues watching them, swerving around cars and speeding up.

They brake suddenly and shoot back, they dodge among the traffic and swing behind a car overtaking us. They mirror it and hide behind them, they accelerate behind them for a bit. My eyes are glued to them; I'm not even looking at Sebastian, just trusting him. He’s muttering about something.Soon, he keeps saying…

Suddenly they break and veer over at us when they’re level.

They’re headed right for our rear tailing corner!

But Sebasitna slams on the brakes then, and I really get thrown forward. I’m off the seat and in the air, the seatbelt is literally holding onto me.

The car veers across in front of us.

Keepsgoing and continues over to the exit lane and corner division protector—
