I retract my hand from the table now. This was why he wouldn’t shake my hand.

“Your trust in me has been shaken, Sebastian. While I know it’s mostly out of your control, I can’t let that be the case as seen by the family. I will figure out what your fate is, but until then you’re suspended from everything and your pay accounts cease. As far as you’re concerned, you don’t work for the Colombino’s anymore.” He intertwines his fingers again, staring over his desk at me. I feel tiny. “I know it isn’t pleasant what has happened, but it is our life. There are rules we all adhere to in an attempt to keep some sort of order. But Carlos felt he could be above it. He felt he could make and break those rules himself.”

I nod and look down at the floor. “I understand,” I say. “As long as Mimi is taken care of.”

“Good,” Luca says.

“That’s all that matters to me, keeping her safe.”

“She will have the best care.”

I rise. “If she is hurt on your watch, Luca, I will come for you too. I’m gonna try and figure all this shit out, but if anything happens to her.” I point directly at his heart. “I will come for you.”

Luca stares at me for a long time. “Good.”

I turn and leave, I grasp the door handle and pull it open.

“Sebastian?” Luca calls.

I turn back.

“Do not let Carlos’ death consume you. Blind rage can only achieve so much.”

I nod and leave, letting the door swing shut behind me. He knows nothing of my blind rage building inside.I’ve been penalized for my best-friend's stupidity and death.

But, those bratva have threatened Mimi and her mother.

As well as my unborn child.

Chapter 20

Mimi

Sophieisstandinginfront of me, trying to block the way back to the bedroom from the bathroom.

“No,” I repeat. “I’m refusing, not because it isn't a nice gesture of yours.”

“But you’re in danger,” Sophie implores. “Fucking Russian danger.”

“I know,” I say, squeezing under her arm and putting my bag of toiletries on the bag I’ve packed to take to my mothers. “My mother is also in danger.”

“She’s welcome as well!” Sophie throws up her hands.

“You don’t understand though, Soph, it’s not the place. It’s not that you’re offering help; it’s that my mother is comfortable in her home. She doesn’t know that Carlos died because of the Russians, she’s grieving because her son died in a car crash. If we come to your house, I have to explain everything else her son was up to since he left home.”

I fought to keep the tears of frustration from breaking through. All I wanted to do was move in with Sophie and Luca too, to hide away and let the problem be sorted out. But Sebastian had already been penalized for that and was trying his best to figure it out. So if that wasn’t stressful enough, there was also the baby…

Which I hadn’t told Sophie about yet.

“What’s it gonna take for you to realize you need to come and stay at our house?” Sophie crosses her arms and leans against the kitchen counter. “I’m only letting you pack all this so you eventually come to ours.” She smiles, but I see the desperation there.

“When are you gonna realize I’m not? Look, I’m grateful Sophie, but I have to go with my mom.”

“At least let me post guards or something!”

“You’ve already got them helping Sebastian.”

Sophie’s smile falters, and her eyes go wide.
