“I can’t tell you all of it,” he said. “But we’re in danger.”

“We?” I was outraged at the fact that he seemed to think that my kidnapping wasn’t already a symptom of that danger but then again, he was too busy thinking that Brody was having me. It wasn’t untrue, but all my father was concerned with was his best friend taking advantage of me. He didn’t seem to believe that any of what had actually happened, happened. It was very frustrating.

“Yes, we’re all in danger,” he reiterated. “I don’t need to tell you everything, just that you need to get your things ready for us to go. NOW!”

We went from having an intimate moment to him treating me like I was just a baby. It was close to how he treated mom, but she wasn’t around anymore to take his bull.

“I can take care of myself,” I insisted. “I’ll go on my own.”

As I got up, I could hear his angry words mixing with my thoughts. He was yelling about how we needed to leave and go to one of his compounds, saying that there were people after all of us. I was to do exactly as he said, or risk getting us killed.Whatever old man, I don’t need your dumb brutishness. It’s probably what got us into this mess.

He left to go get his things but before he did, he called one of his guards. Jackson, again.

“She goes or you die,” my father said.

Jackson nodded, giving me a shrug.

“She’ll come,” Jackson said.

I rolled my eyes at him and stuck my tongue out.

“Get to packing,” Jackson demanded.

“Would a little privacy kill you?” I asked. I was so done with it. With being controlled, treated like Rapunzel in a tower kept as a collectible just because I was “precious” to someone. I was the damn mafia and yet, I was controlled by the king himself.

As we all headed to the different vehicles, I couldn’t help but think to myself -What’s really going on?

I had been kidnapped and now my father was scared? The white, pale look on his face told me that whatever was going on, it was a lot more serious than his burning rage for Brody.

The world around me didn’t make sense, and my heart was empty. All I wanted was for my man to hold me, to protect me, and to love me. Yet, I was alone. Prisoner of my own family, being hauled away to a maximum security prison of our own safety.

BRODY

“We need to talk,” I said to Frank. He had agreed to see me, but he still wasn’t being friendly. I guess I couldn’t blame him, because his daughter was so young, and she was all the family he had left.

I thought about assuring him that I was honorable, but our years as friends proved that wrong in Frank’s eyes. I was just another man - sick and evil with the thought of only one thing.

It was what made dealing with each other so difficult.

“Make it quick,” Frank said.

“The Reeds-“ I started, but Frank quickly interrupted me.

“They’re nothing, I’ll crush them, I’ll crush them all. Don’t mention them again.”

I sighed. Dealing with Frank when he was upset was like dealing with a stubborn child.

“Fine,” I said. “But eventually, we’re going to have to make business with each other work, and that involves -“

“Whatever I tell you it involves,” Frank said. “Definitely not my daughter.”

I had to tread carefully. We were in public at a coffee shop, where Frank held many of his deals. I had set it up this way to not get killed, but something told me he didn’t mind doing it in public. Still, I had enticed him with talks of raising his profit margins.

It was rare to see him here if he wasn’t going to make money.

“It’s all about the money,” I said as the waitress brought me a cup. I had offered him breakfast but he had refused. He rarely refused food. I waved her off, and Frank kept a solid blank expression on his face.
