I would think that it was obvious at this point. Of course, I want to know who’s been feeding him info in order for him to carry out this insane plan. I want to know who would betray my family like that. Who I can deliver to the chopping block once I’m back in their arms.

“You want to know why I won’t tell you?” He tilts his head at me. “Because I know the second that anything like that leaves my lips, you’ll go running back to your daddy with it.”

I flinch. Damn it.

He tilts his chin up. “That’s what I thought.”

I want to argue with him that it isn’t true, but standing here now, I’m not sure it would make much of a difference. Killian can see right through me, even when I don’t realize I’m trying to hide anything from him.

He sighs after a few long moments of silence.

“I believe I’ve given you the wrong impression.”

I look up at him again, seeing his expression change back to the cool boredom from before.

“You are my prisoner. Don’t let my kindness in keeping you here delude you. I’ve been at this game a lot longer than you may think. You’re a fool for trying so desperately to grapple at scraps for a man who could care less about you. No one is coming to your rescue, princess. Let alone your father.”

His words feel like a slap in my face. I’m stunned.

“Isavedyou by bringing you here.” He steps around me, heading over to his open closet.

“Saved me?” I whip around. “You took me from one prison to another! Like a convict. Why didn’t you just kill me instead? It would’ve been easier for you, anyway.”

He lets out a deep growl at my words, turning to face me. “Kill you?”

“You’re no better than him,” I spit at him. “You think I don’t know this isn’t about the Thomas money? That it’s not obvious? You’re just trying to use me to get what you want. Exactly like he did.”

Killian opens his mouth to argue back, but I spin on my heel before he gets the chance.

“Nella.”

He says it as a warning. One that I don’t listen to.

I storm out of the room, grabbing the handle and slamming the doorshut behind me. I don't need Killian twisting my words to get me to believe his lies. It doesn't matter anyway. Whatever game he’s playing, I’ll play better.

I'm in enemy territory. If my father doesn't believe me with words alone, I'll find him physical proof. I'll do whatever it takes to bring down Killian's family. Starting from the inside out.

I can prove myself useful once and for all.

My father will have no choice but to finally accept me.

CHAPTERNINE

Iglare at the closed door and turn away from it to get dressed.

I don’t have time to chase after her. If she wants to think I’m the villain in this scenario, so be it.

I pull my suit on and make sure that my tie is in place before closing my closet and heading out of my bedroom. As I make my way down the hallway, I notice that Antonella’s door has been firmly closed, presumably with her sulking behind it.

I shake my head and head downstairs. She’ll get over it sooner or later—and even if she doesn’t, that’s not my problem. What I need to focus on now is the fact that Marco Ambrosino is currently in my way. He needs to be taught a lesson.

I pass by my office and close the door. I don't want any curious eyes following me around for the rest of the day, even if all my important documents are locked away.

Heading out to the main part of the house, I pass by Ava’s office, noticing that the door is open. She must be going through the new “herbs” I’ve gotten her off the black market. Her eyes had lit up the second I’d given them to her. I can’t imagine what kind of deadly concoctions she’ll be coming up with this time.

The last time I’d given her a gift like that, she’d devised a poison that could render a man paralyzed but keep him completely cognizant. Quite handy for torture.

“Bit of a blow-out up there,” she tells me when I pass by.
