“Doesn’t ring a bell.”

I lift my head. “She was going to ask if you would be okay if I called my friend while you were in the room.”

“Ah, yeah… that.” He looks proud of himself, like he’s somehow pulled a fast one on me. He digs a hand into his pocket and fishes out a phone. “Here.”

My eyes widen. I reach for it slowly. “Really?”

He snatches it back. “Unless you’ve changed your mind.”

I shake my head quickly.

He dangles it over my head. “You sure? We can forget about it—”

“I’m sure,” I tell him firmly.

He tilts his head again, regarding me with an unreadable expression before dropping his phone into my hand.

“Speaker only.”

I nod and excitedly type in Etta’s phone number, tapping the screen to put it on speaker immediately. The line rings and rings, making my heart jump with each pause between them. I hope like hell she answers, because I have a feeling that this is going to be my only chance at talking to her.

“...Hello?”

“Etta!”

There’s a pause. “Nel?”

I sag in relief. “Yes, hi!”

“Oh my god! Nel! Where have you been?! What the hell happened at the wedding? Ben’s dead!”

“Hold on, slow down,” I tell her. “One thing at a time.”

“I thought you were dead!”

That makes my heart stop. I hate that she had to be put through that, especially when it came to me. I wish there had been a way to contact her sooner so that she wasn’t forced to go through an unnecessary grieving process.

“I’m okay, and I’m so sorry. I wanted to call you to tell you that.”

“I’m so happy to hear your voice. Where the hell are you?”

I glance over at Killian, seeing his completely blank expression. It almost feels like he’s testing me.

“It’s… hard to explain.”

“Nel, your dad was looking for you. He’s been freaking out ever since you up and disappeared. He brought me to your house to this weird interrogation looking room and showed me all these photos. One of them was that guy that you made out with at the club!”

I blink in surprise. “My dad is looking for me?”

“Yeah, and he’s pissed!”

“Wait, what photo? We never took any pictures that night.”

“I don't know, it looked like some security footage—but it was definitely that guy. I remember how sexy his back looked when he was walking away from you that night.”

Across from me, Killian lets out a small snort.

I shake my head. “What else did my dad say?”
