He follows the sound of my voice. His small footsteps can be heard on the other side of the fence as he walks through what sounds like layers of fallen leaves from seasons past. My eyes scan over the frame of wood. Without any good footfalls, I’m kind of out of luck on this one.

Leo yowls again.

“I’m coming, I’m coming,” I tell him.

I find the best place that I manage and stick my foot up onto it and grab the post on the inside of the panel. I lift myself up a little easier than I thought I would and clutch the piece in my hands tight while I swing my other leg up.

Leo scratches on the other side of the fence.

I slowly raise my hands above my head and grab the top of the fence, a solid piece of wood with a flat surface on theupper side that allows me to move my feet further up the sides of the panel.

I’ve never been athletic. If it involves me lifting my whole weight, it’s a simple no.

Still, I need to get my dumb cat who, for some reason, has decided that today was the day to test out his mobility. I heft myself up and grapple the top ledge, getting high enough to balance my ribcage on it. I look over to the other side and see Leo calmly looking at me while flicking his tail.

Is he… not stuck?

As if to answer me, Leo climbs up, using his claws. He perches next to me and starts pawing me as if to reassure me. I look back down to the other side, seeing nothing but dead leaves coating the ground.

“You think I should just jump this?”

Leo leans over and rubs his face against my arm.

Well, if that’s not a resounding ‘hell yes’, I don’t know what is.

I try to pull myself up high onto the fence, feeling it move just enough with my extra weight to make me nervous. If I broke it, there would be no way for me to justify or explain it as an accident without raising suspicions.

When I feel a strain in my inner thigh, I carefully lift my leg, wincing. Killian has really taken a toll on me. When we first had sex, I had been aching for days. I still felt twinges in my muscles when I moved my body in a certain way.

When I get my leg up just far enough to hook my shoe over the top of the fence, my other leg twinges and gives out on me. I gaspas I tumble to the ground, landing hard on my hip.

“Ow!”

I roll onto my side, carefully clutching the spot while it radiates pain in slow pulses.

I can’t help but let out a groan. Damn it, why did I think that would be a smart idea?

I hear Leo jump down and run over to me. His scratchy tongue licks along the bridge of my eyebrow, probably trying to comfort me. I wave him off, not wanting to deal with that and my possibly broken arm.

I groan again, winded from my fall. How the hell am I going to get inside now?

Leo races over to the back door, crying loudly.

Chances are no one would hear him, and we’d be stuck out here all night until Killian comes back from wherever the hell he went.

Of course, as soon as he finds me, he’d be pissed thinking I tried to escape.

I roll my eyes. I really don’t want to deal with him. With my luck, he’d chain me to the bed and only allow me to leave it only if I needed to shower or use the bathroom.

“What the hell, cat. ”

I perk up at the sound of Ava’s voice.

“Ava!”

“Why are you laying on the ground like that?”

“I fell and I hurt myself.”
