Getting to the park, I arrive just as the clock on my dashboard hits eight. There is an eerie fog that has descended over the dewy grass, enveloping the wide expanse of space into something mysterious, like something straight out of an 80s horror movie.

One where the protagonist is meeting with the exorcist before the big finale.

I head to the only spot in the park that has two back-to-back benches and sit down on the one facing the field. It was something that we tended to do when we needed to—meeting ‘face to face’ like this. While I had no doubts about my informant and the discretion that came along with it, I never wanted to chance fate by having someone recognize us.

So, this is how we made contact when we needed to.

My informant sits on the opposite side of me, facing towards the parking lot, both of us keeping an eye out for each other’s back.

“How is she?” is the first question out of their mouth.

I shrug, even though I know the gesture is lost. “She’ll be fine.”

“I told you not to back him into a corner like that. He’s dangerous when he feels threatened. Goading him was stupid, Killian.”

I’m not used to being scolded like this, but I let it slide. I do feel bad, but only because Nella had been dragged into the middle of all of this and had become an unnecessary casualty. She, of course, had initially been a pawn in my game. But that was before I’d become fond of her.

“So, what’s next?”

My informant sighs, a tired sounding exhale that I can feel wholeheartedly.

“Marco’s been talking to Edgar Thomas. Apparently, the Thomas’ are out for blood and want to avenge the death of their son. They’re not going to stop until they have someone’s head on a platter.”

I snort. How stupid to go up against mafia when all you have is money.

“Marco showed Edgar a picture of you. Told him you and Nella were behind it all.”

I shake my head. Of course, he did. “Let me guess—it was a picture of us at the club together. Is he trying to lure her out for Edgar?”

“Maybe, the note said as much, but I think he just wants to scare her. Edgar has his own means to get to you.” There’s a brief pause. “You were only supposed to watch her that night.”

I can’t help but smirk, amused by the tone of annoyance and underlying disgust. Well, I may have gone off our agreed-upon script.

“I couldn’t help myself.”

“Whatever. Marco’s got him convinced that Nella orchestrated the whole thing to get out of marrying Ben. They’re coming after both of you, so you need to be careful.”

I had a feeling this might happen as soon as I’d left my meeting with Marco. I grabbed Nella thinking the only other way to seal their deal was to pass her on to the younger brother.

“Marco’s trying to get Nella out of the way, but he won’t do it himself,” my informant goes on.

“Let me guess,” I drawl. “Edgar promised to give him shares to the company if he gets to kill Nella.”

“Bingo.”

Damn it.

I shake my head, curling my fingers together at the confirmation of my fears. “We should move on with the plan. Now.”

“We need to wait a week. It isn’t safe right now. Not with everything going down the way it is. There’s a safehouse just outside of the city that we can all go to. It may lure them out so we can end this once and for all.”

“Why not end it as soon as possible? There’s no reason we should be giving these people more time to plan.”

“I can’t. I have things to take care of, Killian. You need to trust me.”

The words make me want to grind my teeth. I want to, desperately, get all of this over with. But if waiting a week meant we could end this all properly, then so be it.

“Fine, but once the week is up, I’m coming around to kick your door down and drag you out by your hair.”
