“Well,” he says. “Antonella, Nella.”

I feel him grab at my hand, tugging it away from my waist. “It seems like congratulations are in order.”

I blink in confusion at him. What is he talking about? That’s when I realize that he’s staring down at the giant, gaudy ring on my finger. I snatch my hand away from him, wanting to turn around and smash it into the brick wall behind me.

I hate this ring. It’s ugly and gross. It’s nothing like I wanted for myself. Kind of like my future as a whole. It’s not that I’d dreamed of my wedding as a kid, but I knew what I wanted and what I didn’t. And Ben’s ring is certainly everything that’s wrong with this entire ordeal, wrapped up into one sparkly little gemstone.

“Right,” is all I say back.

He studies me for a long moment, his eyes roaming over my face. “You don’t want to get married.”

I sigh. “I don’t really have a choice.”

I don’t want to get into it.

I lean away from the wall, straightening myself up. I force myself to smile at him. “I should go back inside. My friend is probably looking for me.”

“She isn’t.” He surprises me when he steps forward and cups my face. “Why force yourself to smile like that if you’re not feeling it?”

I swallow, feeling like I’m starting to drown in the intoxicating feel of his hands on my face. He caresses the side of my jaw with his thumb. I can feel my body start to tremble under his touch, responding in ways I had no idea that it could. From here, I can smell his dark, amber cologne.

He leans down, pressing a soft kiss to my forehead. I feel my mouth water. I want those lips on mine.

As if sensing my thoughts, he pulls back from me to regard me one last time before pulling my lips to his.

The rough brick grinds against my back as he pushes me against the wall. His hands thread through my thick curls and tug my hair at the root. It makes me moan. I grab at the front of his shirt, pulling him closer to me, aligning our hips so our bodies are flush with each other.

He groans into my mouth, parting from our kiss to cup my face again. Both of us pant as if we’ve just come back from running a marathon.

His dark eyes capture mine again. “You have nothing to fear. Everything will be just fine.”

He completely untangles himself from me before I can say anything else. My heart sinks as he begins to move away, his gaze locked with mine for a long moment before turning around and walking down the alleyway.

I jump when the back door opens again. Etta’s head pops out.

“There you are! I’ve been looking all over for you. What are you doing out here?”

I shake my head at her and turn to look back down the alley at my dark stranger. Etta catches me staring and swings herself around the door.

“Who isthat?”

“I have no idea. I didn’t get his name.”

CHAPTERFOUR

Iwake up hungover as hell, wincing at the blasted headache, barely remembering anything that happened the night before. I slowly sit up and look around, trying to figure out how I got home and where Etta was.

I remember I’d taken shots with Etta. Then I’d been sent that drink that almost choked me to death. After that…

My eyes widen.

The stranger in the alley.

Ourkiss.

I slap a hand over my mouth, still feeling the burn of his lips on mine. My heart thumps in my chest, thinking about the way his body molded to mine and how his hands explored my waist.

I bite my lip and lay back down on my bed. I can feel the heat at my core, making me rub my thighs together. I needed more.
