“You’re not supposed to be calling—”

“Shut up. We've been compromised.”

“What? Compromised?” My informant mimics.

“Yes. According to this note left behind, Edgar left us a little gift and a nice little threat to go along with it. I’m going to need the coordinates to your safe house.”

There’s a long sigh on the other end, one that I don’t have time to entertain.

“Coordinates,” I bark. “Now!”

“All right, I’m sending you directions.”

I hang up and head out the door, the bloody note still clutched in my hand.

Poor Leo.

* * *

I stare out the window, feeling my heart sink the further and further as we drive away from the townhouse. Away from my Leo.

Tears pool down my cheeks as the image of him laying on the ground like that fills my mind. He’s innocent in all of this. Why would someone do something like that?

Next to me, Killian grabs my leg and squeezes my thigh tight. I don’t turn to him, knowing that if I do, I’ll lose it all over again.

I can’t believe this is what my life has come to. Blood and loss with no end in sight. I don’t know how much more of this I can handle at this point. Is it always going to be like this?

It makes me shiver.

Ava finally stops at a mansion that’s right outside of Chicago, overlooking Lake Springfield. I look out of the window, noticing that it’s fairly secluded and quiet.

I get out of the car, my legs slightly less wobbly than before. I wipe my cheeks from the tear stains that have been left there from the car ride.

“I didn’t know the Irish mob owned land out here.” I walk around the car, looking over at the sprawling hills and the lake that was only a few hundred yards away. It is quite beautiful and peaceful. I let the fresh air soothe my soul, even just for the moment.

“We don’t,” Ava answers me first.

I look over at Killian. “Then what is this pl—”

Just then, the front door to the mansion opens and a man I know all too well steps out into the daylight.

I feel my heart stop.

“E-Enzo…?”

He descends the steps and walks over to us.

“Hey… I heard about Leo. I’m sorry.”

He pulls me into a big hug, squeezing me hard enough to knock the wind out of me. I can’t help but fall into him, tears brimming at the corners of my eyes. I missed my brother so much. Seeing him now has been something I hadn’t been expecting. A welcome surprise that makes me feel better.

I’m so glad he’s okay.

I pull back from him to look over his handsome face. He looks so much like our father that it kind of scares me sometimes. But he’s nothing like him. Enzo’s kindness and generosity can never be compromised and turned into cruelty.

“What are you doing here? Where’s mom?”

“She’s okay,” he says into my shoulder. “When dad wasn’t paying attention, I sent her to Italy where she’d be safe. She arrived this morning and is settling in well.”
