“I’m aware but she may not be. I don’t think it’s safe to be seeing her anyway, she’s a goddamn Caldwell.”

“Isn’t that half the fun?” I countered.

Gunnar raised his eyebrow at me, the warning written all over his face. I knew the risks, that’s why I wanted to play the game. At first, it had been purely because she needed a lesson in obedience, and then it had been fun sneaking around with her. It was still damn fun to play with her. She was into some kinky shit, and I could do whatever the fuck I wanted with her body.

But it appears now she was fucking with me.

Teasing me, thinking I would stand for it.

“I want Tommy brought to me.”

“For what? It’s not his fault she picked him to make you suffer.”

“I am not suffering. I could have any woman I wanted.”

“Then why don’t you? Why allow her to step on our side of the city at all. You’re asking for trouble with Tyler.”

“Fuck Tyler.”

“If that’s what you want.”

I rolled my eyes at Gunnar’s innuendo. It was no secret Gunnar rooted for the other team, his eyes firmly set on Tyler Caldwell, nephew to my father’s nemesis Edward. Tyler was quick tempered and foul, he and I had always come to blows while in school, and even went so far as to ruin his school girlfriend.

Now that had been fun.

We rarely saw him on our side of the city these days, and he was still alive for it.

Rose just happened to be Tyler’s sister, and that’s what made our trysts all the more fun.

“Bring him to the warehouse,” I said. “I want a word.”

Gunnar sighed and got out of the booth to fetch Tommy. It wasn’t the kid’s fault Rose had sunk her nails into him to make me jealous but I was going to show him what getting caught with a Caldwell could do to him before he got any more ideas. The waitress brought my drink over to me and I downed it quickly before I took off for my father’s office.

??

Angelica, my father’s new secretary, smiled at me as she exited his office. Her short skirt was still wedged up at the side from where my father’s hand had most probably been teasing her with what would come later. She had to be the longest secretary he’d had since I had been working for him.

“He’s ready for you now,” she said with a smirk. I nodded and headed in. He was signing some papers for some bullshit deal most likely. I’d always hated this business crap, never had the heart for it much to his disapproval, but I did what needed to be done.

“Roman,” he said, as he swept the papers to the side of the table and looked over at me. “Pour me a drink.”

It was his way of proving he was still the top dog by making me pour him a damn drink like a bitch. I knew better than to say no. I moved over to the bar cart and poured him a drink from the decanter and one for myself. He was standing by his floor to ceiling windows when I made my way over, looking out over the city. From his window you could see the huge ‘C’ on the building that almost matched this one in size. Two warring families and one city. It could be the tagline of some cheesy romance story, only Rose wasn’t the love of my life. She was my pet.

“What’s this I hear of a gun battle?” he asked me, not looking at me, but rather out the window. Of course he would have seen the news by now. “Were you present?”

“No, father. I was only just made aware of it.”

“And?”

“Gunnar will do his best to keep the sheriff off our backs but they may end up sitting in a cell over the weekend.”

“Fine. You keep those boys in check, they are your responsibility. I won’t have them screw up any business deals I have going.”

“Sure.”

“I mean it, Roman. You’re my boy but don’t think for a second I won’t do what I have to in order to keep my business running.”

He’d threatened it before. Fuck, at least the sheriff had an inkling of how to keep me obedient without violence. But that’s all my father knew.
