“Yes, isn’t that what you do here?”

“Yes, yes, of course,” he said. “Your father is a powerful man, Jolie, he will find you eventually.”

“And I just need one night of sanctuary, hide me from him, please.”

He nodded, seeming to understand just how much I needed his help.

“Of course I can,” he said. “Come with me.”

He led me down the hallway, past his office and toward a door with a bed behind it.

“I can’t offer you luxury as you would be used to but I can offer you a warm meal and a bed to sleep in.”

“More than enough for me,” I told him. “Thank you.”

“I had thought it odd they wanted to keep me from you before the wedding. I am not accustomed to spending so much time with the mother of the bride and groom in planning a wedding.”

“I know the situation I am putting you in by asking for your help,” I said. “I will be out of your church by sunrise.”

“You stay as long as you need, child,” he said. “It is past time for me to take a stand and not cower to men. I answer only to God.”

I smiled, hoping it was genuine, but I hadn’t slept in days, unable to close my eyes to those parading around me as family when all they wanted was to sell me to the highest bidder.

“Would you like me to deliver a message to Roman?”

I must have looked as confused as I felt because he chuckled.

“Child, I’ve seen the way you look at him, and the way he is insistent on burning every last bridge he has to protect and have you for his own. He’s ignored warning after warning, and even almost destroying his own empire to see you. I may be a man of God but I am no fool.”

My heart just about exploded. He had been looking for me.

“No, Father, I don’t have a message. I’d much rather see him tonight.”

“He’ll be at his club tonight,” he said. “I’ll have one of my good friends come by with something for you to wear.”

I looked down at my ragged jeans and ripped shirt from the bushes I had been hiding in. Not at all the kind of outfit I needed to be seen in.

“Thank you, Father.”

He nodded and moved off as I closed the door and laid my head down on the pillow. The bed was stiff but it was perfect for rest, because when I closed my eyes, I dreamed only of Roman Moreno.

Roman

My knuckles were aching as I massaged them. I’d been punching this lowlife for the past hour and he still hadn’t given up any information. Tyler had them trained well enough they wouldn’t betray him.

I needed a new tactic. Enzo had told me he was marrying Jolie and Paul at the end of the week. He knew something was up but he couldn’t get involved. He was switzerland.

“Vince,” I called out to my man who had brought this lump to me. “Find out who the knucklehead here loves.”

His eyes widened as Vince left but he didn’t say anything. I wasn’t playing around and he needed to know that. Finally, he looked at me, blood dripping down his face.

“No, please.”

“Tell me what I need to know then.”

He grunted in pain, I must have fractured a rib with one of my upper cuts, as he shifted on the chair.

“They’re keeping Jolie in her room, and she’s always with someone, like her mother or her cousin Rose.”
