“I know,” I said. “But…man, I can’t put into words what she means to me. I was willing to leave fucking Verona, man.”

“Finally,” Bennett said with a smile. “It’s finally happened, you’ve been whipped.”

I rolled my eyes at the childish cackle that erupted from my cousin as he bent over, his face filled with joy.

“You done?”

“Think so, but you know I’ll fill you in on some extra jokes later on.”

“I suspect you would,” I said as I pulled on my jacket and led him down the hall and to the altar where Enzo was setting up. He had on his fancy white robe, draped with a purple sash and he had his vows book set up in front of him.

“Where’s Jolie?” Bennett asked me, looking around.

“She’s waiting for you two layabouts to come and stand here,” Enzo said, annoyed. He knew we needed to be quick about this. But I fully intended to enjoy every moment of this with Jolie.

“Boy,” I heard Enzo call out to one of his altar boys. “Go and tell the others to guard the doors to both sides. No one can interrupt us, you understand?”

The altar boy ran off to tell his friends, leaving me, full of nerves, standing at the altar. I’d never thought I would ever be the one to be standing here, waiting for a woman to walk down to me.

I never thought I was the marrying kind at all.

But with Jolie.

Fuck me, she was everything. I’d never known anyone as beautiful as her. She was the sun, and I was the night. Two things that should never go hand in hand, and yet, somehow we made it work. Together, we were an eclipse and soon, we would shower the city of Verona in darkness before we snuck out into the dawn and forged our path to our destiny.

Hopefully we survived, but maybe, just maybe we would perish together.

Jolie

Beth handed me a beautiful red dress, rose embroidery all over the bodice, and a beautiful mermaid style dress that would cling to my legs.

“Wow,” I said as I took it off her. “This is stunning.”

“Perks of having a rich husband who didn’t want to spend any time with me. I spent all his money instead.”

I smiled over at her. “I believe my mother did the same.”

Beth had a smile on her face but she didn’t meet my eyes. She sat down on the cot of the room we were in.

“Are you all right?”

I sat down beside her, the dress laying over my lap.

“I’m perfectly fine, love,” she said. “I just remember what it was like when I fell in love with Marshall. I wasn’t much older than you are now.”

“You loved him.”

“I did,” she replied. “Much more than I understood. The feeling of true love is hard to explain to anyone.”

“It’s hard to explain to yourself, too.”

Beth chuckled. “Yes, that too.”

“How did you meet Marshall?”

“We were in school. I had another boyfriend at the time but he was just so sweet and didn’t care about trivial things like my boyfriend did. I fell hard.”

“What happened?” I asked.
