“Thank you.”

“You look beautiful,” she said. “Now, let me have a photo.”

I turned as she pointed her phone at me and took a snap. She put her phone away and gave me a kiss on the cheek.

“I’ll see you out there.”

I nodded, trying to keep my emotions in check. I never thought I would get married, especially not for love. I’d never been surrounded by love, my entire life. That was going to change.

Roman

Music started, which drained out the sound of the city outside, full of sirens and yelling. The houses of Caldwell and Moreno were falling.

It was chaos.

My mother joined us at the altar, and Bennett quickly dashed over to her for a hug. “I’m so glad you’re okay, Beth.”

She ruffled his hair and blew him a kiss as he took his spot next to me again. I turned to see Jolie walking down to me in a deep red dress that clung to her every curve. Her hair was pinned up with curls hanging around her face, almost like they were acting as a veil.

She moved in front of me with that cheeky little smirk on her face that I loved to kiss off. I knew why she was doing it, because she knew I couldn’t wipe it off her face the way I normally would.

The goddamn minx.

“I’m so glad you didn’t opt for white,” I said to her.

Enzo sighed. “There are some things I don’t need to hear, kids.”

We both chuckled as he began the ceremony. I held onto her hands as she looked into my eyes. Enzo’s words dissolved around us as we got lost in each other’s caress.

“This is where you say something, cuz,” I heard Bennett as he nudged me. A slight chuckle erupted around us as I repeated what Enzo told me to say. She did the same. Then it came.

Time to kiss my bride.

My wife.

I pulled her close, my hands on her waist as she secured her arms around my neck. My tongue swept across hers, softly, a promise of everything I wanted her to have.

A loving husband, who occasionally fucked the every loving shit out of her.

A round of cheers went up in the church from the altar boys and Enzo, surprisingly enough.

Our joy was short-lived.

As I expected it to be.

The sound of sirens outside told me Amir had found us. We had to go. I grabbed Jolie’s hand and headed for the back door. It was hidden from view and could get us away faster than if we tried to get out through the front.

“Ben, you know what to do,” I said. He nodded and ran off without a backward glance to enact the plan Gunnar had so eloquently proposed years ago. Never did I think I would have to go to such extremes but he knew.

He knew back then how bad Verona was getting and I’d been too stupid to realize he was right.

Until now.

“Take these,” I saw Enzo hand me his keys.

“No, you love that car.”

“I love you more, my boy,” he said, pulling me into a tight hug. He was more of a father figure than my own father ever had been. I would miss him.
