“Good.”

He turned and headed up the stairs slowly, as if every step was closer to a certain death.

“Enzo,” I called out. He stilled at the door, his hand on the doorknob but he didn’t turn back around. “Take my mother and leave.”

He didn’t ask me why, nor did he disagree. He simply walked through the door and left us alone.

“I know what we have to do.”

She nodded. “So do I. There’s no way out from here.”

“I know.”

“Let’s give them a show then.”

I smiled as I pulled her to me, kissing her as hard as I could. This woman who I would lay my life down for.

Her tongue was wrapped around mine in a battle for dominance. She tasted like roses and vanilla, as if she were a turkish delight.

My wife.

My Jolie.

Ben entered the church, his eyes wide and panicked. “They have the whole fucking church surrounded. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

“Amir has no boundaries anymore. His bosses are both dead and he’s led by his grief.”

“Gunnar would have hated to see him this way.”

“I know,” I said, a tinge of guilt hitting me. Gunnar was killed because he had sided with the Moreno’s. I felt every bit the one who ended his life even though it hadn’t been me brandishing that knife.

“Is everything in place?” I asked him.

He nodded. “It is. I brought it all but, how are you going to get out before it all goes off?”

I opened the bag he had brought with him and looked down at the C4 and explosives we would need to level the church and bring an end to Verona. Ben and the boys had been setting it up all over the city so it would truly be leveled.

“If we get out, we get out,” I said. “But we both know the likelihood of surviving this, cuz.”

“You can’t sacrifice yourselves. You’ve only just started out.”

I shrugged my shoulders. “If you can save her, do it, but I know she won’t leave my side, just as I would never leave hers.”

Ben’s exasperated sigh showed me just how much he hated this plan but he knew it would come to this at some point. He knew there had to be some kind of sacrifice.

He pulled me into a hug. Not a brief one we usually had but one that said he was going to miss the hell out of me.

“Make sure you get my mom, Enzo and anyone else out that you can.”

He nodded. “You know I will.”

Ben moved off, toward the back of the church with half the explosives. I grabbed some and planted them around the pews. Grabbing the bag, I headed downstairs and put the explosives in the basement.

Jolie came down the stairs just as I put the last explosive against the wall.

“Is it enough for the town?”
