“Oh, come on, Nadia. You could use a tan. Can you put it on my back?”

I helped her with the suntan lotion but put sunblock on myself. It was rare that I came out here to swim, especially when classes had been so busy, but this was actually much needed. I swam laps, thankful for the opportunity given me.

Sophie decided going naked would be okay, so she stripped off her clothes and sunbathed. I really did not understand her.

“Let’s swim naked. You’re not embarrassed by your body, are you?” She jumped in.

What am I twelve?

I ignored her peer pressure antics and kept my suit on. The bikini I wore was one of Paul’s favorite black, micro-string ones. Though I’d swam naked with Paul before, it was never in the middle of the day or with a friend.

“Nadia?”

I froze. My eyes shot to the patio door.

Paul stood there, and he wasn’t alone. Tomas and his wife Cecil stood with him.

“Nadia, hello,” Tomas greeted me warmly. “Come meet my wife, Cecil.”

She waved. “Bonjour, Nadia.”

Goosebumps broke across my skin, and I still couldn’t move.Oh my God. Why was he so angry? And why hadn’t he let me know Tomas and Cecil were coming over too?

“Nadia, cover yourself.Now,” Paul growled.

Even though I had a bikini on, I snatched one of the towels left next to the ladder and wrapped it around my body, cinching it in the front.

“I’ll see you later, Paul.” Gunnar was there, too? He left like the place was on fire. Even his cousin didn’t want to be around Paul’s wrath.

Sophie snickered. “Relax,Paul. We were enjoying a swim.”

I could only stare horrified at her as she rose out of the pool nude. She skipped the towels next to the ladder and sauntered to the patio chairs next to Paul. She bent down in front of him, picked up a towel on a patio chair, and dried her hair.

My skin burned and I gripped my throat, shifting my gaze back to Paul, and found his scowl already directed at me.

Laurence let out a disapproving grunt. “Mr. Crane?”

Not Laurence too.

“That’s Mr. Crane to you, Ms. Wilkes,” Paul answered Sophie in a sharp tone. “Laurence, please take Ms. Wilkes home. Now.”

Sophie stared at him, but Paul never broke his reproving gaze with me.

“Well, nice to meet you, too,” Sophie quipped. She threw the towel over her shoulder and strolled back inside.

I sniffled. “Why didn’t you call first?”

“I did call,” Paul snapped.

I glanced at my phone on the patio and picked it up.Silent?

“Go put on some clothes, Nadia!” Paul roared.

“Paul, you’re making Nadia feel ashamed,” Cecil scolded him. “She’s not even naked. She has a beautiful body, and she’s in her home. Don’t you agree, Tomas?”

“Yes, but my brain’s not working.” Tomas and Cecil laughed.

“Get moving, Nadia,” Paul hissed.
