I laughed. Billy was a bit of a flirt, for sure. “Let me have a word with him. He could probably use the extra money.”

A call came, and when Carson peered at the screen, he held up his finger. “One minute, got to take this.” As he listened, his face lit up. “Really? Oh my God, that’s amazing. See you tomorrow. I love you.”

I guessed it was Savvie.

Though brimming with joy, Carson looked like he might cry.

“You look like you won a lottery,” I said.

“Better than that. Savvie’s pregnant.”

I gave him a hug. “That’s so good. Congrats.”

Looking starry-eyed, he nodded. “We’re over the moon.”

Carson must have transmitted some of his bliss because seeing that glint of joy in his eyes made me realise how lucky I was just to be alive and healthy. I had money. I had a loving mother. What more could I want?

Manon?

“How’s Manon?” he asked.

Mm… mind reader.

“Don’t know.”

His forehead creased. “I saw her at Merivale the other day.”

“How is she?”

“Well, she seemed okay. She had her mother with her—who could have been a vampire going on Savvie and her brothers’ reaction, like they wanted to run to the kitchen for garlic.”

I laughed. “That’s a little extreme.”

“You haven’t met Bethany.”

I thought of that brief encounter in London. Despite my quick exit, I hadn’t exactly gotten a welcoming vibe from Manon’s mum. At that stage, I hadn’t heard about how she’d once sold her daughter to that rich dickhead. Had I known, Bethany would have gotten my middle finger instead of an uneasy smile.

“She certainly freaked everyone out by being there.” He chuckled. “But she was civil. She spent some private time with my mother-in-law. It seemed to make Manon happy to have her there.”

I frowned. “Right.”

That piqued my curiosity. Manon hated her mother.

Afterwhathadbeena long night standing at doors with crossed arms and nodding at all the dignitaries, I went off to meet Billy.

I couldn’t get over Manon taking her mother to Merivale. What had happened? Why the forgiveness?

Had she gotten over me too? Had she met someone? The thought punched me in the guts.

Billy was waiting for me with Sapphire when I arrived.

We hugged, then found a table away from the crowd. It was a Thursday night at our favourite Irish pub. We loved our stout, and that pub had its own brewery.

Billy ran his hand over my buzz cut. “Holy shit, you look like a soldier.”

“You cut your hair.” Sapphire looked shocked. “You had such nice hair.”

I shrugged. “I’m sure it will grow back.”
