“Mm… or just guilt-ridden.”

“Well, if she is, then it shows she’s got a heart. We all make poor decisions. Don’t we?”

“Please, let’s not talk about Peyton again. Okay? He’s locked away, so that’s all you need to know—and that I’m sorry.”

My neck cracked as I turned to stare into her eyes. “What was that?”

“I’m sorry.” Her eyes glistened, and I even thought she might cry. “Now, can we move on?”

Another big first. She’d never apologised to me about anything, ever.

She was right, though. Enough talk. It was phase two of our lives.

If only Drake could find his way in there somehow. With all the forgiveness in the air, could he find it in his heart to do that?

I took her hand. “Come on, let’s get some bubbly.”

She smiled and let me hold her hand, which felt incredibly awkward but nice too.

We headed inside when Drake came around the corner, and I squeezed her hand.

“What’s wrong?” She frowned.

“That’s Drake.”

She took a glance. “He’s gorgeous, but I prefer him with hair. He had nice hair, from memory.”

I’d almost forgotten about my mother’s chilling reception towards Drake that morning they’d met after he’d stayed with me at her house.

His gorgeous hair was gone, but he still looked hot.

As we were on the same path, it was going to be difficult to ignore each other. He hadn’t even tried to call me.

Sapphire had told me they’d met for a drink and that he hadn’t smiled much.

“Hey,” I said as our eyes locked.

He stopped in front of us.

“You’ve met my mother.”

His mouth barely moved.

“Okay. I’m off inside for a drink,” she said, no doubt catching his chilly vibe.

As he watched her go, he frowned. “What’s she doing here?”

“It’s a long story. And I feel like you hate me.”

He scratched his jaw. “It’s not that.”

“Then why haven’t you returned my calls?”

He shrugged. “I needed a break from everything.”

“From us, you mean?”

No answer, just those big blue eyes swallowing me up and making me want to run off somewhere and howl.
