When I sat down again, Savanah shook her head slowly. “Holy fuck. That was insane.”

“Sorry.” I sipped my prosecco, and while my heart still thumped after what had been an out-of-body experience, I stared out the window to calm my nerves.

“That was ballsy.” She shook her head in disbelief. “Where did that come from?”

I could see she would not let that violent outburst slide.

“Let’s just say I grew up on the tough streets. We had to fend for ourselves.”

She nodded slowly, giving me one of those I-think-I-finally-get-it looks. “I know nothing much about you. I’m sorry for hating you.” She started on her second drink.

“That’s all right. I hated all of you for a while there.”

We looked at each and smiled.

Carson entered and went straight to Savanah and hugged her. He kept holding and rocking her, and I wasn’t sure whether or not to stay.

I rose.

Savanah broke away. “Stay. We’ll give you a lift back if you like.”

“No. It’s cool. I’ve got my car. Remember?”

She nodded. “You should have seen Manon,” she said to Carson. “She smashed a bottle and threatened a couple of guys trying to hit on us.”

“She did what?” Carson’s eyes nearly popped out of his head.

I forced a smile. “Sorry.”

He looked at me as though trying to solve a hard puzzle. “This is a rough joint.” Carson turned to Savanah. “And what the hell are you doing here?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. Rough is good sometimes.”

They had another one of their lingering moments, and I collected my bag for a quick exit.

“I’ll be back at Merivale soon. Like in an hour or so. If you need anything…”

Savanah rose and hugged me. And that lump in my throat thickened. What an emotional day it had been, not just for Savvie but for me too.

“Thanks, niece.”

We shared a smile, and I left them there, with Carson holding Savanah’s hand. They were so into each other that nothing else seemed to matter.

I wanted that.

Chapter 10

Drake

Whilewaitinginanoffice overlooking the farm, I watched workers lifting boxes of cabbages and spinach and wondered if my life would ever be the same after what had happened at the casino. Though I thought I’d shaken it off, I kept hearing the bullet ringing in my ear. I could have died saving Crisp. Why?

Put it down to instinct, I supposed, because I hadn’t even had time to think.

While my head filled with gunfire and fiery sex with Manon, who I also couldn’t stop thinking about, Declan entered the office and shook my hand.

He showed me around the office. “We just need someone to oversee the running of the farm and help with administration.”

I nodded. “I’d love to give this a go. Thanks for giving me a chance. I need a break from the gym.”
