I felt a stab of envy, having missed out on all those innocent, childish games.

As she headed off to get drinks, the girl who’d been chatting to Drake jumped up on stage with a guitar.

She’s a singer? I hope she sings out of tune.

Bad me had made a show. I wanted to scratch someone’s eyes out as I watched Drake help her with setting up the microphone.

Savvie passed me a drink. “Drake’s become a roadie, I see.”

“He’s got a new girlfriend too.” I didn’t hide the edge to my voice.

“You don’t know that. She might just be a friend. Weren’t you two together? What’s happened?”

I told her everything.

“Shit. And he’s not giving you a chance to explain?”

I sighed. “He refused to talk to me unless I told him why I had to marry Crisp.”

“Then fess up. I mean, is it that bad?”

I scrolled on my phone and showed her the images that I couldn’t bring myself to show my grandmother.

Her mouth distorted like she’d seen something truly ugly. “Oh, that’s right out there, for sure. And it’s not you?”

I shook my head. “I had it coming, I suppose, after sending Crisp some fake images of my pussy to keep him on a string. That was before you guys accepted me and, well, you know, things changed.”

“Then explain everything to Drake. I went through the same thing with that tape. You remember how bad that was?”

I nodded. “It’s too late. He’s got himself a new girlfriend. He won’t even acknowledge me. I feel like shit.” A tear slid down my cheek.

Savvie placed her arm around my shoulders. “Please don’t cut yourself. Promise me.”

Too fucking late.

I puffed out a breath. “I love him, Savvie. And he told me he loved me. And look how quickly he’s moved on.”

“You don’t know for sure.”

Just as she said that, the girl wrapped her tattooed arms around him for a hug.

Shit.

“Do you think it’s the tattoos?” I asked.

“I’m not a big fan. I like them on men though. Is that sexist?”

“I don’t know anymore. I’m always offending someone for saying the wrong thing.”

She laughed. “Me too. We share that.”

“Hi, everyone,” the girl announced on stage. “I’m Brooke, and I’m so happy to be at Gaia’s opening. It’s such a fantastic place. I’m just going to sing a few of my songs. Hope you enjoy. I’m also selling some CDs for those who might be interested.” She pointed at a box by the stage.

She ran her fingers smoothly over her guitar, and much to my despair, she was fucking talented.

“I’m sunk.”

Savvie turned to me and pulled her sad face. “Don’t jump to conclusions. But yeah, she’s good.”
