"Yes," I replied, defiant.

His smirk deepened, a dimple appearing in his cheek. "Challenge accepted."

It would have been nice to think my pussy was so good that X’s power shook all of hell, but of course when we stumbled out of bed1and went downstairs to the door, it was clear this was something bigger.

"What the fuck?" Taj growled for the fourth time since I'd climbed off X after my fifth orgasm. If the world hadn't begun to quiver like a cat on a washing machine, he'd have coaxed even more from me.Hecame almost an hour ago, but he was addicted to the taste of my lust—and he needed the rush of magic to heal himself, so I couldn't deny him.2

"Seriously," Taj spat as we spilled out of my living room and into the hallway. "What is—"

I rubbed the pain in my chest, my bond with X screaming at me to go back, to stay with him, to keep him safe. But to stay safe, he had to stay hidden.

"We don't know!" Arkan snapped, his eyes flashing with sparks of emotion he'd usually conceal. I quickened my step until I reached him, linking our fingers.

Ark glanced at me from the corner of his eye, a slow, subtle breath leaving his chest along with some of the tension in his shoulders.

"We'll find out," he told Taj, calmer, "and we'll deal with it."

Joseph nodded absently a step ahead of us.

When my mates headed right at the end of the hall, I pulled on Arkan's hand, resistance and refusal burning like lava in my gut.

I physically couldn’t take a step that way—even further from Dev.

"I … I can't. You check that way—but not in this form. Taj, shift, Ark, go all shadowy, and Joejoe—"

His cowl and robe appeared in a sudden flutter of smoky fabric, his scythe appearing in his hand. I hadn't even had to tell him; my heart went all squishy and achy.

Taj shifted and held out his clawed, grey hand. I stared at it for a second—and earned myself a narrowed warning look—before sliding my hand into his.

"I’m coming with you."

I wondered if he felt the tremor that went through me at the thought of letting Joseph and Ark out of my sight.

But they were wicked demons, and vicious fighters. And they had the circle bond; they'd be fine.

Except,a little voice warned,we'd all pooled our strength to help X heal earlier today. And two wasn't a strong link; three was better, five was best.

The ground rocked harder, and I glanced up when dust sifted down from the floor above. Shit, whatever that was could bring the whole castle down.

"Go," I told Ark and Joseph. "Be safe, or I'll murder you."

"Nothing bad is going to happen," Ark replied, holding my gaze in a heavy stare. "I promise, my Aveline."

Oh, we were breaking out themy Aveline?I nodded, my throat tighter.

"I'm near-impossible to kill," Joseph said when I looked at him expectantly.

"You were nearly taken out by a candlestick, buddy," I huffed, trying to be casual about it. Taj stroked my knuckle with a gentle claw.

"The key word beingnearly, sweetness. Go, check on the devil, I can feel how badly you need to."

I nodded. My stomach was twisted up, sickness making me faint. I forced myself to turn my back on them before I could overthink it.

"Fuck," I gasped when every step was like walking through quicksand.

At least X was safe in my suite. No one knew he was back; they'd been too busy getting fucked until their minds melted out of them to see him return, and we needed it to stay that way.
