I chuckled at the way she seemed disappointed when I wasn’t undressing and joining her yet. I leaned down to kiss her. “We have all night. Right now I’m going to unload the truck and, start the fire.” I needed to bring in our suitcases and the groceries we’d bought.

“How about I’ll start the fire while you unload? I mean how hard can it be?”

I took the throw off the couch and wrapped it around her shoulders. “Okay, but make sure you open the flue.”

“Sure, sure. One tiny question though.”

I chuckled, crossing over and pulling a lever on the inside of the fireplace. “The flue is what opens the chimney so the cabin doesn’t fill with smoke.”

“You didn’t know that was my question,” she joked.

An hour later we were settled on the sofa together in front of a roaring fire, wearing nothing but our underwear and snacking on chicken nachos.

“This place looks like it’s out of a catalog,” she murmured.

“I wanted it to be perfect for you.” And tomorrow morning it would be because my brothers were bringing up a snow-making machine, so she could wake to her dream of a snowy cabin in the woods.

“I’m here with you. It’s already perfect.”

“I have something to show you.”

She waggled her brows. “Oh yeah?”

Lifting my shirt, I showed her my new ink over my heart watching her eyes go big at the four letters now permanently etched there.

“You got my name tattooed on you?”

“I did indeed.”

“I thought you said only fools got their spouse’s names inked on them.”

I shook my head. “I’d rather be a fool in love than any other kind of fool. This is forever and so are we.”

“I love it.” She kissed me softly, nuzzling my neck and letting out a sigh of pure contentment.

“How do you feel about trying for a honeymoon baby?” I held my breath. Although I wasn’t sure if she was ready, I was impatient to start our family, especially as my therapy progressed. I was feeling more confident about my ability to move forward into my future, believing I was worthy of it.

She got up to cross to her suitcase. From it she pulled out a long box with a bow on it. “I think it’s time you opened your Christmas gift.”

I took off the box lid to find the contents wrapped in tissue paper. After tearing through it, I gaped at the pregnancy test I found with the two pink lines. “I don’t understand.”

She giggled, curling into my lap. “Do you know what they call people who pull out as a method of birth control?” She paused. “They call them parents.”

I shook my head. “But we only did that the one time, when we were here at the cabin.” Once we’d returned, we’d used condoms. Which meant… “You’re six weeks along?”

She nodded. “I lost track of time, what with the wedding and all, and then yesterday I realized I was late and took a test. Surprise.”

I crushed her lips to mine, so overwhelmed with emotion. Then I started laughing.

“I should’ve guessed it would happen this way, considering all the best things in our lives have been unscripted.”

She started laughing too. “So you’re happy?”

“Just when I think I’ve had the happiest day of my life, you find a way to top it. I love you, Addison, as my wife, as the future mother to our children, and as the absolute love of my life.”

Tears gathered in her beautiful eyes. “Keep talking like that, and you’ll be known as the one in this relationship with all the right words to say.”

“It’ll be our secret.”
