“That would be great.”

“I’ll send over my contact.”

“Thanks. Things going well around here?”

“Fine.”

He chuckled. “You do realize Addison is a huge hit with everyone, don’t you?”

The statement irritated me. “She feeds them and gives them coffee. Of course she is.”

He frowned. “After everything she’s done, in the last few weeks, you still don’t like her?”

Quite the contrary. “I never said that.”

“Then what’s the problem exactly?”

The problem was how much I thought about her. How much I looked forward to seeing her, and how much I hated it. Knowing he wouldn’t believe a word if he studied my face, I got up and gazed out of his window.

“Addison is distracting. Is she even doing real work? The birthday cakes and flavors of creamer are ridiculous, the swag is pointless, and the other day she’s putting up fucking Halloween decorations on the front desk like this is her house instead of a place of business.”

The sound of the door opening caused me to whip around and come face to face with none other than the subject of our conversation.

“Sorry, Nic, I thought you both were out of the office. I came in to put this on your desk for a signature.”

There was a slim chance she hadn’t heard what I’d said, but her next words told me I’d lost that gamble. “Don’t worry. I’ll take down the fucking Halloween decorations and get back to my real work.”

I cursed internally as I watched her walk away like a Tigger who’d had her bounce taken.

Dominic let his expletives fly out loud.

“Great. You’ve gone and hurt her feelings. I’m telling you, Leo, if she quits, you’ll have the guys rioting, and I’ll be leading the charge. She has revamped our new hire process, worked with IT to order iPads and get new software installed for the tracking of jobs, overhauled our website, and designed a client intake form. In addition she’s been working to make this a real office where people enjoy coming. Go and fix it.”

Shit, shit, shit. That was exactly what I was at apologies. Still, I trudged up to the front desk.

Addison was taking down the orange and black lights. She didn’t turn when she heard my footsteps. “I’ll take down the stuff in the warehouse too.”

“You don’t have to.”

“It’s fine. I should’ve asked before decorating. I recognize I’m not everyone’s cup of tea. Hell, my boss in California said way worse things to me, so perhaps the problem is with me.”

Dammit. The sadness in her voice had me feeling like the biggest piece of shit on the planet.

Glancing up at the camera, I hated the fact this could all be witnessed. “Let’s go.”

“Go where?”

“I can’t have this conversation with you inside the building.” I took her hand, regretful the minute I did so because touching her was sweet torture. “Can we go outside?”

As soon as we stepped outside the building, it was evident we still weren’t alone. It was lunchtime, and people were coming and going from the building and on into the parking lot. Not to mention there were cameras. “Let’s take a drive.”

She looked dubious. “Where are you taking me?”

I could think of only one way to possibly salvage this and make things up to her. “You’ll see.”
