“Don’t you dare take anything that asshole said to heart. You understand?”

Dammit, I’d been so close to making it without any tears, but one slipped past.

Leo cursed softly.

Where was my pride when I needed it? Maybe the Spanx had left no room for it tonight.

The rough pad of his thumb swiped my tear away and caused an involuntary shiver to snake through my body.

“Come on, get in the passenger seat. We’re getting some dinner; then I’m driving you home.”

“What about your truck? Did you drive?”

“No, Craig drove us over.”

As I climbed into the passenger side, I had to fight back a giggle at the sight of the giant trying to fit in the driver’s side of my small car. His knees were to his chest, the steering wheel lodged in his sternum. He let out a sigh of relief once he found the button on the side of the seat which moved it back.

“I could’ve driven my own car.”

“I don’t do well as a passenger.”

Shocker. “I can see that about you.”

Leo was all alpha, all the time. Not surprising he’d insist on driving.

“Not because of a macho thing,” he amended, “but because I get carsick as a passenger.”

“And here I thought you were about to make a quip about my driving.”

His lips twitched. “I have no doubt you’d be the type to wreck your car if it meant a squirrel made it across the road safely.”

“Duh. Who wouldn’t make that choice?”

He chuckled, the rare sound warming me down to my toes.

Fifteen minutes later he pulled up in front of what I’d call a dive bar. Turning toward me, he murmured, “Stay here. I’ll be back in a few minutes. Do me a favor and lock your doors.”

“All right.”

A weird energy crackled in the air between us, and I could’ve sworn his gaze lingered on my legs. But then he moved to get out of the car and the moment was gone.

The blast of cool air blew some sense into me. I was delusional to believe Leo was interested in me. Sure, I’d had guys find my curves attractive, but men who spent hours in the gym working on their bodies and treating them like temples did not find vertically challenged, curvy girls appealing. And I wasn’t even taking into consideration the fact our personalities could not be more incompatible.

Flipping the lock on the car, I sat there and waited. The darkened parking lot held a number of cars. Must be a popular place.

Ten minutes later the sound of someone trying to open the driver’s side door startled me. After clutching my hand to my chest, I realized it was Leo. Quickly, I unlocked the doors. “What the hell?”

He shrugged. “Wanted to make sure you followed directions.”

He put a large paper sack behind his seat.

“Whatcha got in the bag?”

“Dinner.”

“Okay, big talker.”

He proved true to the designation as I gave him directions to get to my apartment building, not saying a word as he drove, while he parked, or as we walked up the stairs to my front door.
